  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Rosie O'Donnell continues to comment on President Donald Trump following her move to Ireland.

Last week, O'Donnell appeared on Ireland's "Late Late Show," where she discussed her recent decision to move out of the U.S., her longstanding feud with Trump and more.

At one point, she touched on Trump's comment about her to Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin during his visit to the White House earlier this month, admitting she wrote Martin an apology.

I think I remember seeing her first criticism of Trump on the television. I didn't take much notice at the time as I just saw it in passing.

It's a two way deal though. I don't care for his arrogance, but if she spends all her time doing little else but ridiculing Trump and his administration, she can't expect a thank-you card.

The following paragraph was in the linked article.
Since Trump’s first presidential run and win, O'Donnell joked to "Late Night" host Seth Meyers about how she spends "about 90% of my working hours tweeting hatred toward this administration."

A sure sign of a mental illness imo. There is more to life than Trump. Yet there are some that have been stuck in this mode for years. It’s all they talk about. What a miserable way to live.

As a convicted felon, an adjudicated sex offender, an imperialist bully, an unrepentant liar, and someone whose policies are playing havoc with the economy is in the White House, it is little wonder that we think about him a lot.

This is an American, and a worldwide, tragedy.

Lest Trump supporters feel inclined to report this post for flaming I will counter that all my claims are robustly supported by lots of evidence

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

You are entitled to your opinion. Obviously, American conservatives disagree with the hyperbolic exaggerations in that post.

What, specifically, is hyperbolic?

Let's start with door number 1. Is, or is not, Donald Trump a convicted felon?

The felony was on made up charges and done in a progressive liberal district which is extremely biased against conservatives and Donald Trump. I believe that ONLY liberals think that there was any honesty at all in that whole mess of lawfare against Trump.

Let's move to door number 2. Did, or did not, a jury convict Donald Trump of sexual abuse of one Jean Carroll?

Again, that was done in a court ruled by a judge who is a progressive left wing liberal with that civil lawsuit. The judge and jury were clearly very politically biased.

Simple fact is this: Donald Trump was convicted. He is a convicted felon. That was my claim, and my claim is obviously correct.

It was the weaponization of lawfare.

He won't? He promised a crowd of evangelicals, that if they voted for him, they wouldn't need to vote ever again. And some Republicans have floated the idea of removing presidential term limits for Trump.

He's trolling the Democrats, and they are falling for it.

Which, when viewed in context, offers no evidence at all in favor of what people have tried to use it for, that Trump was saying there wouldn't be elections or whatever.

Here's a good write up on it:

For example, there was a recent massive freakout when Trump told a crowd, “Get out and vote! Just this time – you won’t have to do it any more.” Vice-President Harris and ex-Republican Adam Schiff both told audiences that Trump was announcing the permanent end of democracy if he won, which is just dishonest partisan paintball, but then a bunch of “respectable” media sources followed suit. They were grossly distorting the comments, and either they were doing so deliberately, or they were too grossly irresponsible to watch the 90 seconds of surrounding footage to get the context. I watched the tape, so I’ll tell you the context.

Trump was talking, for the minute leading up to this, about how the Democrats "cheat," how they engage in massive voter fraud to run up the score, and how they fight voter ID because they want to facilitate that fraud. He says this means that he can only win if his victory is so big that it's "too big to rig." So he has to get absolutely everybody to vote, it has to be an absolute landslide so the Democrats can't cheat. Once in office, he promises to fix the cheating so that Republicans no longer need to win by such massive margins and low-propensity voters can go back to staying home most times. Therefore "you won't have to vote again."

This is not, in any way, a promise to abolish democratic governance in the United States, and it only sounds remotely like that because most media outlets are deleting all that context! The Guardian article, instead of explaining this, is 100% reactions from other people who very obviously did not watch the 90 seconds leading up to the quote!

The most mind-boggling part of all this is that what Trump actually said is still really really bad! In reality, although some Democrats cheat (and some Republicans cheat), they very rarely cheat in the way Trump describes here, and the impact on the final result is nothing like what Trump suggests. He is, once again, setting up his followers to refuse to accept the democratic legitimacy of a free and fair election that they will very plausibly lose, with predictably terrible consequences for democracy!

But, instead of telling that true story about what Trump said, media has somehow transmuted it into a more sensational yet completely and obviously false story about what Trump said!

As one can see indeed from this excerpt, the writer is no fan of Trump either--but still correctly notes how he was taken out of context.

And some Republicans have floated the idea of removing presidential term limits for Trump.
People "float the idea" of constitutional amendments all the time. They almost never go anywhere, and this one certainly won't either. The strict requirements for an amendment requires you get both Democrats and Republicans on board, and obviously Democrats aren't going to vote on such an amendment while there's a Republican in office (and vice versa). The only way to overcome that would be to have the amendment specify it only applies going forward, and not to any current or prior Presidents (thereby not granting any extra power to the current president), in which case it obviously wouldn't give Trump another term anyway.
