  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you have any Interesting stories to tell ?

Whether it be your own or something you have read.

I have one that I've just read;

main-qimg-8a805ba52dbcdff1d5e09775e27a327d

A man passed away and left his dog to his son. The son was surprised when he found out the dog had disappeared. A few days later, the cemetery called him and told him that a dog had been digging on his father's grave. The son went to the cemetery and took the dog back. The next day, the dog escaped again and went to the cemetery. This happened three times, until the son finally decided to leave the dog there. He put food out for the dog, but it didn't eat. The dog became angry and wouldn’t let anyone come near the grave. The dog stayed there for a week, guarding the grave, until he passed away, lying on his owner's grave.

This story shows how animals can be more loyal than humans. ❤

Queen Elizabeth I coffin bursts open.

Elizabeth made it clear that she did not wish to be disemboweled following death (as would be customary). Yet shortly after the queen died, Rober Cecil left orders with the surgeons to do so, while he went to London to proclaim James VI the new King of England. And so the queen was embalmed and her body transferred to a lead-lined, wooden coffin.

Elizabeth’s body lay in state at Richmond (perhaps in the chapel – for similar, see Prince Arthur’s lying in state at the chapel in Tickenhall House) for several days before being transferred to a barge and brought downstream to the Palace of Whitehall. Elizabeth Southwell describes that the coffin, draped in velvet, was watched every night by ‘six several ladies’. No location seems to be given for the queen’s continued obsequies, but again, perhaps we might confidently assume that the chapel would have been the most appropriate place.

During the period in question, Southwell reports how there was a loud ‘crack’ from the coffin as Elizabeth’s ‘body and head’ broke open from the pressures of gases released as the corpse rotted. While the force of the explosion splintered the ‘wood lead and cere cloth’, people speculated on how much worst might it have been if the body had not been opened and disembowelled after death! It is interesting isn’t it, that the story of this event occurring after the end of Henry VIII is much repeated, and seen as a sign of his obesity and gluttony. But here we have the same thing happening with his daughter, who was not subject to such vices!

Police Officer gets grilled by a Lawyer in Court. What he says next is classic.

If you ever testify in court, you might wish you could have been as sharp as this policeman.
He was being cross-examined by a defense attorney during a felony trial.
The lawyer was trying to undermine the policeman's credibility...

Q: "Officer did you see my client fleeing the scene?"
A: "No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocks away."
Q: "Officer -- who provided this description?"
A: "The officer who responded to the scene."
Q: "A fellow officer provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust your fellow officers?
A: "Yes, sir. With my life."
Q: "With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?"
A: "Yes sir, we do."
Q: "And do you have a locker in the room?"
A: "Yes sir, I do."
Q: "And do you have a lock on your locker?"
A: "Yes sir."
Q: Now why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with these same officers?"
A: "You see, sir – we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room."
The courtroom erupted in laughter, and a prompt recess was called.
The officer on the stand has been nominated for this year's "Best Comeback" line and we think he’ll win.

This reminds me of a movie I watched based on a true story called 'Arthur the King'. It starred Mark Wahlberg who played Michael Light the real life head of a luckless adventure racing group from the US who competed around the world. They never won a race and would end up taking the wrong turns and getting lost or taking the long way.

They retired but decided to come back for one more competition. It was in mountains and jungle of the Dominican Republic. As they arrived Wahlberges character Michael Light befriends a stray dog. There were many strays in poor health on the streets.

During the race they get lost again and who should turn up but Arthur the dog. He ends up becoming their 5th member and even saves them when they were heading down a track in the night that went over a cliff.

The team ends up leading for the first time in their racing career and need to cross a river to take a short cut to win. But they lost the dog and had to go without him. As they began to cross Arthur turns up and begins to swim after them only to start sinking as he was too weak to swim.

The team had to make the hard decision to go back and save Arthur or continue on to win. They ended up going back and losing the race.

But to their surprise their team had become famous all over the news and everyone was cheering for them. Arthur had become famous from a poor street dog. So though they did not win the race they won the hearts of the nation.

Michael Light ended up saving Arthur and taking him home where he lived a happy life and he and his wife began a dog rescue in the Dominican Republic to save the street dogs.

Red Dog is another famous true like story. Red dog was a famous outback dog who travelled the Western Australia's vast Pilbara region. He would befriend a stranger and become their companion for a while and then go off on his own for walkabouts. Then he would turn up again and befriend someone else. He was a tough and loyal dog. His name was Red dog because of the red dust in the outback that covered his coat.

Anyway they made a movie about Red dogs and the lead dogs name was Koko. He ended up becoming just as famous as Red dog. A women who had him from a pup loaned him to the movie makers to do the film.

At the end of the film when they were handing Koko back she was pining for the lead actor Josh Lucas who played one of his masters. So the women owner knew that her Koko had attached to Josh and Josh had grown to love Koko as he was an incredible human like dog. So she gave Josh Koko. Josh was not a dog person but Koko changed his life.

Its sort of like when two hollywood stars meet on set and fall in love. But in this case it was man and dog lol.

There's a statue to Red Dog in the Pilbara, which is the home of the Australian iron ore industry in West Australia.

There's a humorous scene on a bus with all the knockabout male miners going to work for the day. Suddenly a young attractive female gets on board! The reaction is hilarious. Attractive females would have been few and far between at the mines in those days.

Unfortuately man's inhumanity is shown in that the real Red Dog was baited by some !!??**,

Many years ago I hitch hiked from Rockhampton to a town called Marlborough. I'd been on a skin diving trip up north with a couple of mates and the big end threw on old my Holden FC car. So I left it at a garage in Marlborough and went with the mates in their car.

A few weeks later it had been repaired so I had to pick it up. I caught the train to Rockhampton from Brisbane, and then hitchhiked to Marlborough.

In the mtonths preceding there'd been a couple of attacks (murders?) of hitchhikers by their drivers or vice versa, so no one was game to pick anybody up. It took four lifts and all day to travel 80 miles.

But on the way I bumped into a Canadian hitchhiker. He said he'd been crossing paths with a Swedish hitchiker all around the globe by the sound of it. Anyway we got picked up after standing in the sun for a couple of hours (January in summer - the tropic of Capricorn passes through Rockhampton). And over the next hill where we got dropped off was this Swedish bloke!

He was bored out of his mind waiting for a lift, and was standing there hitting rocks into the bush with an umbrella using it like a baseball bat.

And that was the last I saw of either of them. They're both probably old blokes by now (like me) reminiscing about their mutual meetings on planet earth on roadsides with umbrellas and stones!

When I was about 10 years old I lived near foothills. And at night, I felt compelled to hike up into them. This was around 1972 and back then as long as I got home by a certain time, no one kept track of where I went. Anyways I remember some kind of encounters I had. Mostly I just remember pink light and vague figures. Was I being summoned into the foothills by extraterrestrials?

Concurrent to that time and place, in my neighborhood there was a corridor that must have lead to a parallel world. I lived on Dickens St. And the next street over was/is famous Ventura Bulivard. Now at the back of an apartment complex on Dickens there was a long rectangular corridor that opened out onto Ventura. Now if I went around the corner at Kester Ave to get to Ventura Blvd I'd see places that still exist on Google street views. But if I went through the corridor to get to Ventura, most everything was different. Like the restaurant on the corner of Ventura and Kester (Kerry's then and now Mel's) was very different looking. Different colors and just strange. Most all of the buildings and shops were not the same and just different altogether from anything else I've seen in this world. Cars were different too. I can't quite describe how exactly. And I always felt unwelcome there. Like if I sayed there too long I'd get into trouble. We moved away when I was 10.

This story was fiction mixed with reality. Maybe.

From Readers Digest over 50 years ago.

In the days before WW II there was a Polish Pilot who saw a Jewish man being chased by a crowd, for no reason other than being a Jew. This was at the airstrip he used and he decided to help that man. He flew him just across the border into Switzerland, landed in a meadow (yes that is possible with a light plane. A bit risky for an unchecked field however).

Fast forward a few years. The Pole joined the British Airforce and was shot down defending England. He suffered major head trauma. Major and tricky. It seems there were only 2 surgeons who had the needed skills. One was Jewish and had made his way to England from a meadow in Switzerland.

This is true story. The names have been anglaicised.

YS Shaw was a highly talented individual. He was so brilliant that he was once famous. Once, a neighbouring country sent an envoy with a message: "Our country hope to invite Mr. YS Shaw to Nippon to become a state minister."

YS Shaw took the imperial examination and won the highest degree in one fell swoop. Its exam was a notoriously difficult one and many famous scholars of the past did not pass it until several attempts. One scholar passed it only at the 9th attempt when he was 60, yes, 60. And, another scholar passed the exam at an old age of 73. 73 years old -- past the retirement age! And now YS Shaw obtained the degree at the first attempt at a young age. Since then, YS Shaw became proud, thinking that he was a great talent.
However, YS Shaw, although so talented, had a troubled official career and was never promoted to a high position. Why? How come somebody so talented, had a troubled official career? To find out the reason, please read on.

One day, YS Shaw took a pot of wine to the countryside to relax, and sat alone in a pavilion, drinking and composing poems. Suddenly it started to rain heavily, and an old man in purple clothes ran into the pavilion with a child to take shelter there. YS Shaw looked at the old man up and down and perceived him to be of lowly status, so he mocked the old man in an arrogant manner. After a while the rain stopped, and suddenly a team of carriages and horses came to the pavilion. The old man and the child boarded the carriage.

Immediately after that, YS Shaw asked people who the old man was. Somebody told YS Shaw that the old man was C Vaughan, the Minister of Civil Affairs. Now when YS Shaw learned that the old man who just boarded the carriage was C Vaughan, he was very shocked. In the past, YS Shaw had sought C Vaughan's audience again and again but his efforts proved fruitless. Now, a golden opportunity arrived at the door, but he had wasted it through his own arrogance.

The next day, YS Shaw wrote a long letter to apologize to C Vaughan for yesterday's presumption. C Vaughan asked the guards to take YS Shaw to the corridor. C Vaughan scolded YS Shaw: "Unfortunately, you and I are not related, otherwise I will definitely teach you a lesson. You become arrogant because of your talents. Do you think that being a highest degree holder is the end?" After hearing what C Vaughan said, YS Shaw left in despair. Later, he only became a lowly official until his death.

The following is a YMCA camp devotional story. I have verified everything except what was said in the locker room before the game. Heck, it was an old story when I first heard it in the 60s. One bit of background. This took place long before Bowl Game expansion. There were fewer Bowl Games then than there are New Years Bowl Games now.

Boston College had a great year in football. They were undefeated and untied and only had one game left, against Holy Cross, a team they expected to beat easily. If they won that game, they were Bowl bound.

Before the game they prayed, not for victory per se, but that God would watch over them and His will be done.

They did not just lose to Holy Cross; they were beaten badly.

No one wanted to go to the planned victory celebration. Some even felt God had abandoned them.

They felt differently when they saw the Sunday papers. The headlines, not just in Boston, but for the entire country were all the same. The hottest nightclub in Boston, The Coconut Grove, had burned down. Of course they had selected it for their victory celebration. It is still the largest loss of life in any nightclub fire in The United States by most definitions. Yet they had all been spared.

Side note. In most places with revolving doors there are now also more ordinary doors opening out near them. This is in large part because in The Coconut Grove fire panicked patrons rushed both sides of the revolving doors, jamming them shut and cutting off any major route of escape.

At the age of 19, he found himself in prison, accused of infiltrating the American secret service and stealing many of the country's secrets.

His father was an elderly man who lived alone. One day he wanted to plant potatoes in his garden, but he did not have the strength because of his advanced age.

Then he sent a message to his imprisoned son, which said:

My dear son, I wish you were with me right now to help me plow the garden and plant these potatoes. Now I have no one to help me.

main-qimg-62f71ead91abe41c222581d9ead210f1

After some time, the father received a letter from his son saying:

Dad, please don't dig in the garden because I hid something important, and when I get out of prison, I'll tell you what it is.
Within an hour of the message, the secret service and the army surrounded the house.

They dug the earth meter by meter, removed everything, but found nothing and left the house.

A week later, the father received another letter.

Dad, I hope the land has been well plowed by the police, now you can plant potatoes and if you need anything else, let me know. I can't be with you, but I will do my best to support you in any way I can.

This is suppose to be a true story in the annuals of history and an extraordinary coincident.

On December 5th, 1665, a shipwrecked in the Menai Strait: There was only one survivor. His name was Hugh Williams…

On Dec 5th, 1785, a boat wrecked on the Isle of Man, in the Menai Strait: There was only one survivor. His name was Hugh Williams…

And in 1820, a third vessel sank in the Menai Strait: There was only one survivor. His name was Hugh Williams…

Finally, on August 19th, 1889, a coal barge sank in the Menai Strait. This time, there were two survivors.

One was named…Hugh Williams.

The other survivor was his nephew, who happened to be named…

Yes, Hugh Williams…

Is this just a coincident. Some say the name was very popular during this time which may have increased the chance of this happening. Others suggest some sort of reincarnation of the same sole survivor coming back. Either way its fasinating.

Hurricane Helene was forecast with the eye to go far enough west of us that the winds weren't forecast to be that intense here. I checked the 11:00 PM forecast, saw it hadn't changed, and went to bed. I woke after midnight to the sound of high wind. The power was out. It turned out that Helene had tracked further east than forecast, the eye passing outside the cone of uncertainty. Instead of tropical storm force winds, we had hurricane force.

I lay awake praying, for us, and for family in the bath of the storm. Prayed for protection. After about an hour, worried enough that thought about venturing out to check on things, but realized it would be too dangerous because of debris in the air. At one point I heard the "freight train" sound associated with tornados. Had never heard that before. It was like a continuous freight train whistle.

After about another hour, the winds started to lessen and went to sleep. Woke at my regular time, dressed, got a flashlight and went outside.

There was still enough wind that the light rain was nearly horizontal. There was no damage to the roof. An oak tree I'd worked about was stripped of leaves. Pines had fallen a few yards from the house; part of the top had broken out of said oak and fallen beside the house. A huge pine limb had broken off and was laying beside a vehicle, but not on it. There were other limbs and tree tops laying in the yard, but the only damage to the house was a strip of flashing that came loose and I only had to tack that back up.

Still didn't realize how bad it had been until I tried to go to work. All roads were blocked by trees and power lines. Did manage to go out on a road after someone broke a cable by running their car into it.

By then I decided to check on a family member we'd been unable to contact. One road was relatively open and intact, but several routes I tried were blocked. On the last possible road, helped someone cut a tree out of the way, then, about two miles away from the relative, waited while locals with chain saws and a tractor remove another tree.

By then I resolved if the way was still blocked, I was walking in, but the road was clear. One tree had fallen on the power line just above the relative's property, snapping the top out of the pole. Another was down maybe a quarter to half mile down the road where it had taken down the line there. But the only damage in the relative's yard was one limb, and a dead tree than had broke the line serving their house. There was no other damage.

The relative was fine and was surprised I'd come to check on them. They had slept through the hurricane.

Would later find out there was, as described by a lineman, a sort of pocket there, where damage wasn't as severe. Elsewhere there were trees down. After leaves fell in the fall, noticed some trees down maybe a quarter to half a mile from the relative's house, where I had seen a tree on the line. But the house was undamaged.

It would turn out that the eye of the hurricane has passed close by the relative's house. Yet they had no damage.

I don't want to ever forget that. God showed His hand in a mighty way. He kept us safe.
