  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A necessary approach to Orthodox Christian faith.

Dr Christopher Veniamin discusses an important basic approach to our living faith. Our faith is shaped by revelation and our intellect can only express this in created terms. If we lose this distinction then our spiritual faith can become confused by over reliance on the intellect.
It is only by grace that we can participate in God’s grace which is uncreated. We cannot know God’s essence ( John 1:18) yet since the Son declared Him, by grace the Son shows us ( as to Philip) the Father ( John 14:8-10) and beyond words to the uncreated light on Mt. Tabor ( Matthew 17:1-10).

There is much more discussed in depth and understandable way on each point. There is much to retain but whatever is remembered and learned is a plus. It is about 30 minutes and I had to clear several ads as I watched.

loved having his class. thanks!
Terms that are read in print or online seem more difficult to grasp. When these are spoken, they seem much clearer and he does it well.

Rus’s post from thread to be deleted ( I didn’t warn him on time).

Rus’ post from my inadvertent double thread.

This seems correct as long as we understand that “revelation” is to us as individuals, and that WE are learning and discovering as we go; the consensus of the saints on Church teaching is NOT a changing thing, though the Church may clarify something that had not previously needed clarification.

I’m just speaking against the modern trend in the Church to speak of a “living Tradition” as an attempt to actually change Church teaching, as if Christ had not already been the final Revelation to man. But yes, we ourselves, born yesterday and dying tomorrow, are learning things we didn’t know one thing at a time.

Everything else is clear. The right warning against over-reliance on the intellect (Thomas Aquinas took it to the limit in his Summa Theologica when he began analyzing the Eucharist), the view of grace and God’s essence seems to my limited intellect to be what the Church teaches.

I’ll just say that Dr Christopher is definitely in the mindset of St Silouan and St Sophrony (who was his spiritual father). I remember in class he would warn us of being too scholastic, psychological, or philosophical.

Thankyou. I have decided to watch from the beginning - 80 videos I think. Very helpful for the stage I am at.
