  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump threatens to cut U.S. aid to South Africa over land law

Trump’s comments waded into a sensitive racial issue and deepened already sharp divisions between the United States and South Africa.

The subject of Trump’s post appeared to be a recent law allowing the expropriation of land without compensation in rare cases: a measure South Africa’s government has said is aimed at ending racial disparities in land ownership in the postapartheid era. Trump’s comments were not the first time he has waded into South Africa’s sensitive racial politics, after suggesting during his first term, also without evidence, that there were “large scale” killings underway of White farmers in South Africa.

It was not immediately clear what assistance Trump wanted to suspend; in 2023, the United States obligated nearly $440 million in assistance to South Africa, the most recent year that full data is available. The lion’s share went to health programs, especially HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention.

Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa and is one of Trump’s most prominent allies, has also repeatedly accused South Africa’s government of anti-White racism, touching on themes popular with far-right groups in the United States.

Darn. Your headline sounded so hopeful. :sigh:
No disrespect but....

Really?

Why do you think Trump would do that? It's not who he is.

In the same way that a left handed person won't suddenly become right handed, Trump can't defend the human rights of coloured people or the poor.

Don't be silly. It's not who he is.

No one is 100% good or 100% evil. Obviously, I'm horrified by what he's doing in Washington right now. But it's possible that, of the thousands of things he does during his upcoming presidency, a few of them will be good. A left-handed person won't suddenly become right-handed, but a left-handed person might pick something up with their right hand now and then.

A broken clock is right twice a day. Of course, it's still a broken clock.

While I agree that Trump may end up doing something(s) that I agree with, I think that's different than him showing empathy to the two groups I've mentioned. I simply don't think that will EVER happen.

I agree that Trump does not have a history of showing empathy towards others. Like you, I expect to see him acting chiefly in the interests of wealthy white people such as himself during the next four years (though I think some of his current actions are going to trash the country even for rich white people, so who even knows?).

Still, he could surprise us.
