  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Decrying ‘wasteful spending’ in a social post, Trump said he instructed the Treasury Department to stop producing new pennies.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump said he directed the Treasury Department to stop producing new pennies.
  • The production of a penny costs more than the coin is worth.
  • But Trump’s order is on shaky legal ground, as it might take an act of Congress to retire the penny.
President Donald Trump has set his eyes on a new target in his pursuit of cutting government spending: the penny.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” Trump posted on social media on Sunday. “I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let's rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it's a penny at a time.”

While Trump hasn’t been outspoken on the topic before, his new Department of Government Efficiency did target the penny in a social media post last month.

“The penny costs over 3 cents to make and cost US taxpayers over $179 million in FY2023,” it posted. “The Mint produced over 4.5 billion pennies in FY2023, around 40% of the 11.4 billion coins for circulation produced.”

Here’s what to know about Trump’s order to stop producing new pennies:
