  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Progressive members of the U.K. Parliament have introduced a formal call to abolish daily prayers in the House of Commons, a centuries-old tradition, saying prayers are “not compatible with a society which respects the principle of freedom of and from religion.”

Labour MP Neil Duncan-Jordan has led this effort, submitting an early day motion and writing to the Commons Modernisation Committee to request the removal of prayers from formal sessions.

Duncan-Jordan claimed there is cross-party support for the initiative, The Mirror reported.

Waiting outside for prayer to end? This practice is freedom of religion. They choose to wait outside. They could easily just sit and wait inside for a few moments.

Simply a moment of silence while prayers are silent? No harm no foul. The members wishing to pray could draw up a prayer they all pray silently, but together.

Given that 46 percent of MPs took the secular affirmation or swore on a non-Christian text, we believe that the continued use of this procedure is now out of date and needs replacing.

Is it me, or does this mean 54% are perfectly happy, because they swore in on a Bible ? Plus how many "swore in on a non-Christian text" but do not mind praying with Anglicans ?

Having prayers at the beginning of the day feels like an outdated and outmoded practice. In a modern workplace...

Oh wow, an 11th Century building, commoner access to House of Common since 1649....modern ?

2019, a similar motion on this topic attracted 15 signatories...

Out of 650 MP's! (They have 8 so far this time).

which MPs must attend if they wish to guarantee a seat.

Because 650 people do not fit into the seats...but being willing to pray enhances the chances of a good seat.

I would now type "Jesus please help the National Secular Society to get their sums right and stop grabbing headlines with dodgy statistics", but that is hopeless and disrepectful because they hate prayer. Doh.
