  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director, said during his Senate confirmation hearing Thursday that he would initiate an investigation into the FBI’s 2023 “Richmond memo” that targeted so-called “radical traditional” Catholics.

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, asked Patel during the hearing: “Would you commit to me that you will … officially withdraw this memo and make it clear that this is not only unacceptable, but that it is an absolute violation of the First Amendment that every American enjoys under the Constitution of the United States?”

Patel replied: “If I’m confirmed, Senator, yes.”

Hawley followed up: “Will you also commit to me that you will conduct an investigation and find out who wrote this memo, who spread this memo, the field offices involved in this memo?”

“Will you find out who is involved in this gross abuse of Americans’ First-Amendment rights and will you discipline them, and, if you possibly can, will you fire them, Mr. Patel?”
