  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yuval Noah Harari has a new book on misinformation called Nexus, about how new technologies like the printing press at the time of the Reformation lead to intensification of paranoia and conspiracy theories. It took centuries for laws and norms to catch up with the technology.

I agree that the laws of a country, may lag behind the move of technology.

But, my main point was that the current dilemma in America (not knowing how
to evaluate opinions and theories, to demonstrate that they are true or not),
is tied up with America's ditching of sound Epistemology.

This is a different topic, than the current state of legislation about technology.

People simply don't care about epistemology, for the most part. I tend to agree with David Hume, that reason is ever the slave of our passions. People tend to believe what they want to believe, and when they are facing perceived psychological or existential pressures, they start believing nonsense.
