  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An update, from a NY Times article I read this evening:

Previous inaugural prayer services were hosted by the Cathedral but planned with the Presidential Inaugural Committee, meaning the president-elect often picked the participants. But that changed last year, when the Cathedral itself took over the planning well before Election Day, Bishop Budde said. It was a move toward religious independence, so the service itself would be free of partisan interference and so it would not be seen as a coronation or sacred anointing.

After Mr. Trump won in November, the Cathedral gave his team a selection of proposed music and readings to consider for the service. But the choice of preacher was reserved for the Cathedral alone, a spokesman for the Cathedral said.

Source: The Bishop Who Pleaded With Trump: ‘Was Anyone Going to Say Anything?’

So apparently this year's service was more independent of the president's choices than I realized. It would explain how Bishop Budde was the preacher, even though she has been critical of some of Trump's actions in the past. (In his first presidency, for example, she criticized him for using tear gas in front of an Episcopal church in her diocese. Surely Trump must remember that.) The cathedral had more control of the service this year.

The service itself can be viewed here (without outside commentary, of whatever bias!):

The service leaflet, giving descriptions of the various speakers and their religious affiliations, is here:

During the service, prayers were offered by people of a number of different faiths, reflecting the religious diversity of our country. The "Great Spirit" prayer was offered by Chief Jesse J. Swann, Jr., chief of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe, one of our country's indigenous tribes.

I've just finished watching Bishop Budde's sermon. This is the first Inauguration-week Prayer Service I've watched, so I don't know whether past prayer services have been more bland, with generic prayers for the wonderfulness of our nation. (In the past, before livestream, I often had school or work during the inauguration events.) Bishop Budde's sermon was definitely not bland. Right now, in our country, we have not just division, but contempt for each other, and it's appropriate for a bishop to address that. I thought the bishop's sermon was excellent. And, to be clear, it is completely in line with the views of the Episcopal Church. In our baptismal vows, we promise to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves, and to respect the dignity of every human being.

Overall, my thought on the sermon is that if you're going to go into a cathedral and ask its bishop to hold a prayer service for you, then you need to be prepared to listen to what the bishop has to say. If you know that you disagree with the beliefs of a bishop and her church, then pick a different location for your prayer service.
Thanks for the input and link!

Well I got to watch most of that just now, and Bishop Budde does not sound to me like she is really directly rebuking the President, more like she is making an appeal for less contempt between Americans and their own fellow citizens. She does sound very supportive of immigrants, which of course would annoy everyone who feels threatened by them, but even that sounded like she was calling for universal respect for humanity, rather than specifically criticising any one person.

I do not know what to make of the part where the system has changed, and the Cathedral were planning the event long in advance, and that the President had less options than previous years about what was happening and who was going to speak though.

It may be good for people to avoid Episcopalian Churches then as you cannot be sure that they will preach sound Christian doctrine and instead offer political speeches. Right leaning President's going forward should avoid this particular Cathedral as well as the Episcopalian Church going forward.

May I ask how I went against post 13?
Members who do not truly share the core beliefs and teachings of a specific congregational forum may post in fellowship or ask questions, but they may not teach or debate within the forum.
  • Stating or implying that another Christian member, or group of members, are not Christian is not allowed.
Further posts here need to be Episcopalians, Anglicans, or people who know what those folks believe answering HARK's question, not claiming that Episcopalians or Anglicans aren't Christian

That is all in post #13
