  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nov 2024: Illegal Border Crossings Drop 78% - Year over Year

Will Trump declare a national "emergency" at the border?

“The border that the incoming administration is inheriting is a border at which the number of encounters is well below the number of encounters in 2019,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during an interview Wednesday.

Illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border have continued to drop through the last several months of President Joe Biden’s term, with the number of migrants stopped by Border Patrol agents falling in November to 46,610, according to data published Thursday.

The November figure is the lowest one-month total tallied by U.S. Customs and Border Protection since Biden took office. It represents a 78 percent decline from the 207,680 encounters CBP reported in November 2023.

The sharp drop in illegal crossings is mainly the result of two factors, U.S. officials and analysts say. Mexican authorities have interdicted record numbers of migrants attempting to reach the United States, and Biden officials implemented new rules last summer effectively barring asylum claims by border crossers who arrive illegally.

It was nice of the Biden administration to finally start being proactive in border security a few months ago after years of neglect, to help make President Trump's job in fixing a gargantuan mess a little easier.

What about all the ones the Biden administration flew in?

The thread addresses what Trump will do (or not), namely, declare a "National Emergency" (when there is no basis for doing so).

If you mean will he deploy the military or not, he made it clear in his inauguration speech that he will. Which got a standing ovation.

Your pro-family President...

The Trump administration revoked a Biden executive order that created a task force to reunify families separated at the southern border. In the time the task force was in place, it reunified nearly 800 children with their parents, according to a report it released last year.

As I recall during his first term, Trump deployed active duty military (7k or so) to support DHS operations - laying razor wire and providing surveillance. He appears to be taking it one step further this time:

He declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border to allow him to circumvent Congress and unlock federal funding for border wall construction and other enforcement efforts. Mr. Trump appeared to go further than simply having the military support border authorities with construction. He also signed an order that gave the military an explicit role in immigration enforcement and directed the Defense Department to come up with a plan “to seal the borders and maintain the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States by repelling forms of invasion.”

The directive would likely clash with an 1870s law called the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally limits the use of regular federal troops for domestic policing purposes.

As I have stated numerous times over the years, the active duty military and the National Guard are not trained to be immigration officers. If more manpower is needed, then support Congressional legislation to have more DHS immigration officers hired.

Looks like Trump isn't going to do it the way you want him to.

He's never worried about laws or given procedures before. It's silly to think this presidency would change that.

I would be shocked if he did. After all, he had the GOP Senators kill a bi-partisan border security bill that would have provided DHS more resources. You see, hiring more DHS staff just doesn't sound as exciting as sending the 82nd Airborn to man our borders....it's all a show.

I don't know. I feel like it's a national emergency as long as he's in office.

What the Senate Dems should do is reopen this negotiated bill, add a DACA solution, funding for The Wall, perhaps back off financial support for asylum seekers and try to get it passed through Congress.
