  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For the fifth-consecutive year, Arkansas has been honored with the distinction of being the “Most Pro-Life State in America.”

Americans United for Life released its “Life List 2025” last week, which ranks states on the basis of how “life-affirming” their laws and policies are regarding issues including abortion, assisted suicide and conscience protections in the healthcare industry.

According to its annual report, Arkansas topped the list, followed by Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Indiana. Tennessee, which previously ranked 13th on the list, bumped up to No. 6. Alabama, which had previously placed at No. 10 on the list, dropped to 16th place.

Speaking as someone who lives here, I'd say I guess it depends on how you define pro-life.
We have the highest maternal death rate in the country. The federal government offers Medicaid to needy mothers until their babies are a year old--but the governor is the only governor in the country to have refused it, ending coverage for new mothers at 60 days.
Some of the stats noted:
  • Infant mortality (ranked 49th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, meaning Arkansas has one of the highest mortality rates).
  • Percentage of new mothers who did not begin receiving prenatal care in the first trimester (ranked 48th, meaning Arkansas has one of the highest percentages).
  • Percentage of preterm births prior to 37 weeks of pregnancy (ranked 46th, meaning Arkansas has one of the highest percentages).
  • Breast and cervical cancer deaths (ranked 46th, meaning Arkansas has one of the highest death rates).
Yes, I live here. My husband took a position in a company here when he was 50, having lost his previous position, and we are now retired here. We are not personally affected by these health stats--he has the VA and medicare, and I have Medicare and a supplement.
I am involved in a number of charitable and advocacy organizations to help the poor and undeserved in our state, being retired.
The state legislature has just begun its new legislative season...we've been told they're going to address the postpartum Medicaid problem, but we'll see...

I’ve never been to Arkansas.

You’re right, I’m sure there are poorly written laws that affect people. And I’m sorry low income mothers are having that experience.

That’s not right.

I just read this:

Arkansas

Arkansas has the fifth-highest maternal mortality rate in the United States of 37.5 per 100,000. Conway Regional Hospital OB-GYN Amy Johnson said that part of what contributes to the high rate in Arkansas is overweight and obese mothers being at higher risk of developing life-threatening problems during pregnancy. This is a common issue among southern states. HB1440 was passed in Arkansas to create a maternal mortality review committee to help understand pregnancy-related deaths and to help improve maternal health and prevent these deaths in the future.

As I said, they are trying to address it, and hopefully they are trying to address the 49th ranking in infant mortality and the 46th ranking of premature births, too. But to say that for the past few years Arkansas is the most pro-life state in the country seems like the organization conveying the law needs to look at factors such as infant mortality, premature births, and maternal mortality when they issue such awards.
In terms of "overweight and obese mothers," I call that a cop-out. The state is also 48th in the number of pregnant women who are able to see a doctor in their first trimester. If poor women had access to obstetrical care, no matter what their weight, age, or other health conditions were, those numbers would go down.
