  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

A member of Finland's parliament who has faced a years-long legal battle after sharing a Bible verse on social media refuses to back down from her freedom fight.

Päivi Räsänen told "Higher Ground With Billy Hallowell" her legal battle began more than five years ago, when she challenged Finland's main religious body, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, questioning why it had "decided to support, financially and publicly" a local LGBT pride parade.

"It was a disappointment and even shock to me and many others," she said. "Many of my friends decided to resign the church, and I was also praying ... 'What should I do now?' I was very worried about this very public statement of the leadership of the church, because I was worried that it will undermine people's trust on [the] Bible and its authority."

Important facts:

1. The Finnish constitution protects one's religious freedoms. The court already acquitted Räsänen of the charges, ruling that her statements did not meet the threshold for incitement to hatred as defined by Finnish law. The court acknowledged that Räsänen's statements were controversial and could be offensive to some, but concluded that they did not constitute a criminal offense.

The court also emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of speech and religious expression, and stated that Räsänen's comments were made in the context of a public debate on the role of religion in society. Furthermore, the court ruled that, although her views might be outdated or offensive to some, they were not intentionally aimed at inciting hatred or violence.

2. In 2023, Finland's Prosecutor General announced that they would appeal the ruling, and the case was brought to the Finnish Court of Appeal. The legal process is still ongoing as of 2024.

After the appeal, it will be a useful precedence for the future. The clash between religious freedoms and the freedom of speech and the protection of the LGBT and similar groups (extremely strong in Scandinavia) needs to be sorted out. It basically had to be done at least once, to figure it out legally, because the situation is something new and emotions are intense on both sides. Its not a coincidence that she is a politician - a public figure.
