  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Shocking new data shows a majority of practicing Christians, including pastors, admit to viewing pornography. Beyond that, a large share say they are comfortable with the habit.

These findings come from a new report from Barna titled "Beyond the Porn Phenomenon."

"Even though practicing Christians were still found to view pornography less frequently than non-Christians, the gap between the two groups was only 14 percentage points," Christian Post reporter Leonardo Blair writes. "Some 54% of Christians reported viewing pornography compared with 68% of non-Christians."

This is because the economic structure has added instrumental pervasion (i.e. commodification) to its instrumental perversion and cynicism.

Now, its utility is all so very easy to access. And with all of the developments of industry and legality that have changed over the past several decades, we see those of us who otherwise should not be so engaged, thus engaged.

Obviously, we need to repent.

I recall reading a study a few years ago using the demographics reported by a leading porn site. That study reported that the site's highest usage by geographic area correlated with the so-called "Bible belt." While correlation is not causation, it seems to suggest a disturbing trend.

I'm not sure I consider those statistics shocking, even among Christians there has been a normalization of extra-marital sexuality that makes sexual sin of a wide variety appear less serious. It's easy to get caught up in a libertine culture and adopt values that see porn consumption as a harmless act of indiscretion, if it is viewed as sin at all. There's also the question of ease of access and ability to do so in secret that makes it more likely that it will be consumed. And it's not as if Christians and pastors engaging in sexual sin is a new phenomenon, many priests have had women on the side throughout history and many more would have had the opportunity presented itself.

Yet most Christians would defend to the death, the rights of pornographers and the right of people to watch and consume it without impediment.
I don't either. There's no basis to defend porn. But that is just how the standards have changed now where porn is just seen as a normal practice and in fact a right to express oneself and be fullfilled.

But Paul says to avoid sexual immorality like the plague as it can take down the best of churches. Its a spiritual battle and you have to treat it as such.

But the idea of humans denying their sexual desires is alien to modern secular society. Its almost like you are giving up something to be human. But that is the whole aim of Christainity is to deny our carnal flesh desires in favor of Gods spirit.

Porn is addictive and a ban would probably be the best solution to Christian temptation in this area. If it is not available you cannot view it.

That said I think that Christian churches major a little too heavily on sexual sins. In America, they should talk about concern for the poor more and in Europe more about how Jesus hates selfish ambition, pride, and jealousy. The New Testament gave a story of mercy and Jesus said go and sin no more when confronted with the woman caught in adultery. The sermon on the mount references are an impossible standard that none of us have met and yet all of us must aspire to.

It was a weakness of mine once upon a time. Now I want absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever. There's nothing in my browsing history I'd be ashamed of anyone seeing. All credit to that going to the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit.

I think all Christian men should have accountability software.
I don't come from a tradition that has "confession", but I think every man should have an accountability friend or priest.
That's true. Many men become addicted. They MUST be held accountable.

Anyone, I repeat, anyone can become addicted. Our brain chemicals become addicted to each other. IMO, it doesn't matter where the trend occurs. Those who are addicted need help.

My opinion only
