  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Gosh, I wonder what could possibly cause such an unhinged reaction by someone to some small, insignificant town that no one ever thinks of? It's such a mystery!

They were going to send in sniffer dogs to check for explosives. But for some reason they weren't available...

That's what you get when you pour too much fuel into the hate machine.

Someone should tell those guys that they're supposed to threaten colored people and not public officials.

Could be ... not saying it is ... this small town is in the news headlines because of the effects of mass migration causing issues .... so those wanting to bring attention to themselves or something might be leveraging (taking advantage of) through the fact this town is in the headlines.

Just a thought.

Gosh, it's probably a left winger - right wingers go to DC with their issues. We don't attack our own communities.

What makes you think the bomb threats are coming from Springfield?

While the town has been feeling some "growing pains" and "transition pains" by all objective accounts due to the large demographic shift... this particular set of incidents putting them in the headlines is almost exclusively related to the "eating dogs and cats" nonsense that was being perpetuated.

Trump had an opportunity today to denounce the bomb threats in Springfield and perhaps help defuse the situation there, but He didn't.

Reporter: Do you denounce the bomb threats in Springfield?

Trump: I don't know what happened with the bomb threats. I know that it's been taken over by illegal migrants, and that's a terrible thing that happened.

That's the more "ugly" part of our politics.

When candidates are in the position where denouncing heinous actions are "dodgy" questions because offending extremists could cost people elections, that should be cause a self reflection period.

It's reminiscent of the 2020 debates and political climate where it was:

"Do you denounce the Proud Boys?"
vs.
"Do you denounce Antifa?"

...and they had to deflect with answers like:

"I'm not familiar with the Proud Boys"
and
"Antifa is just an idea, it's not a group"

If the "loonies" were really just "the fringe" as we're led to believe, then they wouldn't be walking on eggshells to avoid upsetting them. The fact that they'll dodge and avoid saying certain things that may alienate them is a solid indicator that the "loonies" make up a larger portion of the electorate than maybe some would like to believe.

To sound like a broken record, a lot of this could get sorted out if we had 4 political parties instead of 2. Two conservative parties, two liberal parties, the loonies in each faction could gravitate to their respective extreme parties, and that would leave the reasonable people knowing which two respectable options were on the table... we could get back to a place where the sane portion of the electorate could have an "Obama V. Romney" type of choice instead of what we're stuck with now.

The Republicans do have two parties. One follows Trump wherever he goes, whatever he does and whatever he says. The other is what the Republican party has always been.

But do they really?

That's like saying "Democrats have two choices because people like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema exist"... if the "looney" portion of the base is going to demonize the more moderate portion of the base (and the moderate portion of the base has no leverage), then it's not really a choice.

I still stand by my premise that if Canada (a nation with a population a fraction of ours) can support 3 well-represented parties, we can support 4.

C'mon...the Republican party now has two factions. One that is all in for Trump whatever the cost. And the other is being dragged along with them. We've already seen so many senior Republicans not just rejecting Trump but actively voting for the Democrats. I doubt if there's a danger of a formal spilt because I think Trump will lose and there'll be lots of angst and internal reflection of where they went wrong and what they need to do to correct their course.

But the "old school republicans" voting for the other party doesn't really represent another faction...at least not in any meaningful way. It's not as if Harris represents what they stand for either.

If the people fed up with the extremists in their own party have no choice but to vote for the other party (that's also been partially captured by their extreme portions of the base) as a "protest vote", then that's not really a solution to the problem I was describing.

Fed up republicans voting for democrats, and fed up democrats voting for republicans still leaves us with just democrats and republicans, so we're back to square one in that situation.

People like Dick Cheney hating Trump and voting for Kamala out of spite doesn't provide the "challenge" that an opposing party needs in the form of a check on their power.

We need to have contrasting viewpoints represented to have a healthy democracy, simply giving in and letting the other side do whatever they want because your own guy is extreme isn't a feasible long term solution.

That's basically a "let democrats do whatever they want as long as their candidate selection is less extreme" model, and that's not good.

Completely unsurprising. The man never skips a beat when he's asked to actually lead, but instead chooses to do whatever panders to the worst hatred and division imaginable.

Wittenberg University cancels events, activities after receiving shooting threat

Wittenberg University has canceled all events and activities on Sunday after receiving an email about a potential on-campus shooting threat, according to an alert from the university.

The university said the threat targeted Haitian members of the community. The campus is located in Springfield.

Wittenberg Campus Alert

Wittenberg University is currently taking extreme precautions following an email that threatened a potential shooting on-campus tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, 2024. The message targeted Haitian members of our community. Wittenberg Police are cooperating with the Springfield Police Division and the FBI to investigate this threat.

The Springfield Police Division will increase patrols on-campus tomorrow. If you are on or near campus, prepare for additional instructions or a lockdown if we learn more from the ongoing investigation. All activities are canceled on Sunday, Sept. 15.

University administrators recognize that the city of Springfield has experienced an increase of threats to local government, businesses, and schools in the past week. We take this threat seriously and will provide updates to the campus as we learn more about the situation.
