DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh’s prime minister, [Sheikh Hasina], resigned and fled the country Monday after weeks of protests against a quota system for government jobs descended into violence and grew into a broader challenge to her 15-year rule. Thousands of demonstrators stormed her official residence and other buildings associated with her party and family.

These politicians need term duration limits. 15 years is a long time.

Absolute monarchies were a thing back-in-the-day, too, don’t forget.
True, and I am glad that I do not live in that era. I do not want a king or queen that rules for 50+ years, though the late Queen Elizabeth was not so bad.

That is even worse. 20 years is way too long, that is almost my lifespan so far (age 24 here).

It’s also a parliamentary system so ministers get voted in and then they vote for the prime minister. Parliament can also remove the prime minister with a vote of no confidence.

Her father was also the PM after Bangladesh won its independence in 1971.

Yeah, but we are not gonna defend 20 years as PM. It would be much more fair if PMs could have term limits as well. I do like a parliamentary system though. We should get the UK folks on here, and see what the British and Scottish have to say about this, as the UK uses a parliamentary system.

Yo, @mindlight , as you are in the UK, do you feel that PMs of Bangladesh or any other country should have term limits, or and/or a maximum term duration?

There are no term limits. Don’t compare to a presidential elections. This is more like a house rep who gets to be speaker. Except in this case the prime minister is head of government, but not head of state.

The US does not have term limits for reps or senators.

If there is no clear majority the parties have to form a coalition government.

The entire operation is largely based on seniority. Term limits stink, it makes the electorate lazy, though it would tend to create new and clever ways to get in on the graft before one “timed-out”, so corruption could be rooted out faster.
