  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, 1 Timothy 4:

1 Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons, 2 influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.
Believers can damage their consciences through persistent sin or false teaching. Some Christians abandon their faith, and their consciences can be seared.

But can a Christian sear his conscience to permanent damage, or can he sear it, but it can be fixed?

Some can be permanently seared. Some may repent after temporary searing.

1 Corinthians 5:

5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
Leave him to Satanic influences. Hopefully, he will learn and repent.

Anyone, Christians and non-Christians, through stubborn unrepentance, can damage their consciences.

Well, I just plugged this into the AI (not sure why it uses the John Calvin stuff), and this is what it said:

A Christian believer should not intentionally seize their conscience as it is an integral part of one's faith and spiritual life. The conscience represents a person's moral compass, being "nothing but inward integrity of heart" (John Calvin, The Institutes of the Christian Religion). In this context, the conscience acts as a bridge between human actions and God's judgment.

Our consciences can be influenced by various factors throughout life, some of which may lead us astray from living in accordance with biblical principles. For instance, Paul warns against putting aside "a good conscience" (1 Timothy 1:5), emphasizing its importance as a foundational aspect of faith and morality. He also mentions that those who have done so have "made shipwreck concerning faith" (1 Timothy 1:19).

Moreover, in the Book of Corinthians, Paul advises believers not to let their freedom infringe upon others' consciences or personal beliefs (1 Corinthians 10:28-33). This passage underscores the delicate nature of conscience and its interconnectedness with community within the Christian faith.

As for whether a Christian can permanently damage their conscience, it is not appropriate to state that in absolute terms as each person's spiritual journey is unique. However, repeated disregard for one's conscience may lead to a hardening or desensitization of moral sensibilities over time. This process might make it more challenging for an individual to discern right from wrong and maintain a strong connection with God.

In terms of specific examples of influences in this world that can be damaging to our morals, some may include exposure to immoral media, peer pressure, materialism, greed, power-hunger, unforgiveness, bitterness, envy, and pride. It is crucial for Christians to remain vigilant against these potential threats to their consciences by seeking God's guidance through prayer, studying the Bible, and surrounding themselves with supportive Christian community.
