Ephesians 4:9 But what does “He ascended” mean except that He descended to the lower parts of the earth?

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,
the righteous for the unrighteous,
that He might bring you to God,
after being put to death in the fleshly realm
but made alive in the spiritual realm.
19 In that state He also went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison

Full Context given in Ephesians 4
Ephesians 4:8 For it says:

When He ascended on high,
He took prisoners into captivity;
He gave gifts to people.
9 But what does “He ascended” mean except that He descended to the lower parts of the earth?

Prior to Christ, it seems he did not have the power/authority/permission to take the righteous dead with him into heaven, but God did instead, in just a small handful of times, Enoch, Elijah, Moses (given that he was at the transfiguration.. i wonder why Enoch wasn't)

If you'll note from Mat 27, the graves were opened and the righteous went into the city and appeared to many. this had never happened before in history to our knowledge. so, yes, the captive were freed...

as much as i don't like this website, its worth reading on this matter

Peter and Jude talking about the spirits in captivity, appear to be referring to the angels in eternal chains, the ones that sinned in the first rebellion in heaven. we should not mix up their statements with the ones in Psalms speaking of Jesus setting captive humans free.

it is also not clear if the righteous dead prior to christ were in the same place the unrighteous dead were..

so you should have had a 5th option in your poll.

Thank you so very much for answering! No obligation, but would you be so kind as to vote for the OP Poll?

What would you label this 5th option? I will add it word for word.

@johansen, I went on ahead and distinguished the Righteous dead from the Righteous and Unrighteous dead for your voting purposes. You can change your vote if this understood you correctly.

This is only in reference to Human Souls.

I believe that it was only the righteous dead, the Old Testament saints, who were released.... or broken out of the realm of the deal by the power and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is a very biblical stance. You acknowledge that He descended into the lower parts of the earth, which is far beyond a large portion of Christendom.

All Love in Jesus Christ to you, Vambram, my friend and brother IN Jesus.

I was taught in my Baptist churches and schools that after He died on the cross, Jesus Christ entered into the spiritual realm of the dead. It wasn't an actual physical location. 44 years after hearing that from the pulpit, I still believe that today. When He brought forth the "captives", those souls of the righteous dead (the Old Testament saints) were delivered from "Abraham's bosom" a.k.a. Paradise, and taken up into the 3rd Heaven to live there with the Lord God.

May all Love in Jesus Christ be upon you as well, my friend and brother in Jesus.

To each and all of you that are answering and voting, I express the deepest of gratitude! I'm hoping and praying that a discussion might begin here, possibly in time, because this discussion is shelved in much modern theological discussion.

Omnis Love to Omnis of you in the Perfect Name of Jesus Christ!

Jesus Christ of Nazareth did not break them out , He opened the narrow gate into the Kingdom of God . It was the promise fulfilled , given to those who had faith in the God of Abraham . Blessings
