Theologian Albert Mohler and Pastor Douglas Wilson engaged in a discussion this week at the fourth annual National Conservatism Conference (NatCon 4) in Washington, D.C., about the proper role of Christianity in the government.

During a Tuesday panel titled "The Crisis of Meaning and Morality in the West," the two theologians appeared to find common ground in their belief that Christians should be committed to "maximizing" the Christian underpinnings of the State in the Western world and especially the United States.

Wilson has pastored Christ Church (CREC) in Moscow, Idaho, for more than 30 years, and recently penned Mere Christendom: The Case for Bringing Christianity Back into Modern Culture. Mohler has been president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, since 1993.

Highlights of their back-and-forth, which was moderated by Edmund Burke Foundation President Yoram Hazony, circulated Tuesday on social media.

Megan Basham, an evangelical Daily Wire reporter and author of the upcoming book Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda, also participated as a speaker at the NatCon 4 conference and tweeted out the more notable portions of the discussion between Wilson and Mohler.

This is actually an important discussion. A bit naive considering the losses to secularism that we see, but at least they are realizing that something is lost when we lost Christendom. Now they want that back and they're trying to figure out how to do it.

Christendom was trans-national, trans-linguistic, trans-tribal. It was held together by Latin, where commerce and science and diplomacy and statecraft could be conducted among people from many countries. It was also held together by princes marrying princesses from all over Europe, cementing alliances. It fell apart because of the Reformation and the rise of skepticism, AND nationalism, AND advances in warfare, AND the demise of Latin. Getting it back was one of the goals of the Christian Democrats, but that was too big a reach to actually succeed.

IF, big IF, we are to avoid anarchy and the race to drive off a cultural cliff then something needs to be done to rescue the culture. Or rescue the cultures. I think Nationalism is the dangerous way to do that. Hopefully these guys figure that out before they make a mess. I'm guessing Trump wins in November. And that we change course (Oh please change course!). But I want these guys to be smarter than nationalism. And they better realize that Catholics matter in all of this. So far it seems a very narrow evangelical/Fundamentalist thing.
