Is it Okay to take the side of idolaters in case they are being oppressed by some other non Christian monotheist community/ religion?

So here is the thing, I reverted to Christianity in late 2023 in a serious manner and this question has been bothering me ever since. Are we allowed to do what I said in the thread title? And adding to that, are we allowed to care for idolaters in Christianity? Would appreciate answers that are backed by verses from the scripture. Thanks.

Welcome back to the Christian faith, brother. What type of idolaters are you talking about? Those who idolize money, actual idols (such as statues), idolize their land, a movement, or idolize themselves?

Those who worship idols as gods. Sorry should have been more clear in my post. Basically polytheists.

Such as Hindus and Buddhists? No, I would never take the side of those folks, cos of the verses below, but I would pray for their conversion to Christianity. If Muslims persecuted Hindus, I would pray that both sides make peace, and convert to Jesus.

John 10:9 (NIV): "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture."

John 14:6 (NIV): "Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Deuteronomy 4:2 (NIV): "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you."

Alex is right on salvation, we have to show them one way Jesus. Part of that way though might be to help them if they are truly oppressed by another group. The Uyghurs in China for instance are not idolators but Muslims but since they are oppressed it is fine to stand up for them. Bullying, intimidation, and persecution is wrong. These verses come from a list found at: 14 Verses About Helping Those in Need

1) Psalm 82:3

“Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”

2) Psalm 140:12

“I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.”

3) Proverbs 14:31

“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

Got three more verses, coming in hot. Also, Isaiah 1:17 resembles Psalm 82:3. :)

Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV): "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Isaiah 1:17 (NIV): "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."

Ecclesiastes 4:10 (NIV): "If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."

You might point out that you are not standing up for their wrong activity. But you are pointing out how the bullying is wrong. And, of course, both wrong groups are in themselves oppressed by Satan's evil spirit >

"the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience." (in Ephesians 2:2)

Your question made me think of a verse from Paul's letter to the Galatians:

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Ga 6:10 NKJV)

So we are especially to do good to our fellow Christians, but we are to do good to all. That would seem to include supporting those who are oppressed, even if we don't agree with their beliefs.

I think this is the answer which I was seeking for and this makes the most sense of all of the answers here in this discussion. I am at peace with myself now. Thanks so much @David Lamb

Really appreciate this verse. Thanks again.

Acknowledging wrongs is fine. Even when they originated with believers. You're not obligated to defend wrongdoing or downplay poor behavior. It ruins your witness. When I was in pagan circles long ago most of the participants had a christian upbringing or some exposure. They also bore scars of bad experiences and some too horrible to name from supposed practitioners.

There's no measure of brotherhood that would secure my alliance in those situations. I stand with the victims always.

Idolatry is a sin .... we are never to take the side of sin. We are to point people to Jesus ... they are either open to it or not.

1 Corinthians 5:9-13 New Century Version (NCV)I am writing to tell you that you must not associate with those who call themselves believers in Christ but who sin sexually, or are greedy, or worship idols, or abuse others with words, or get drunk, or cheat people. Do not even eat with people like that.
