Rosaria Butterfield, a former lesbian activist who repented and became a Christian, recently offered advice regarding how to witness to individuals struggling with same-sex attraction and gender confusion.

Speaking during a recent interview with Pastor Jamie Bambrick that went viral on X earlier this week, Butterfield maintained that the Evangelical church "has just been completely co-opted by bereft, mushy Gospel Coalition-y kind of language."

My issue would be with this:
Butterfield went on to explain that "just because your sin is unchosen and not acted upon, that doesn't mean it's not a morally culpable sin,"

I have a VERY VERY hard time believing that a sin is not a chosen activity.

Like, my mere breathing is a sin?

I'm sorry but that doesn't fly right with me.

Perhaps I'm just having trouble thinking of ANY other sin that is not a chosen behaviour... Can anyone help with that? I know the church (or at least parts of the church) has a history of believe CERTAIN things that fall in that category:
red hair
left handedness
being black.

but I can't htink of any modern examples.

She identified as a lesbian. She shouldn't speak for the experience of all LGBT people. For most people that identify as gay, their experience is quite different.

There is no "cure" for being gay, and perpetuating that narrative does a great deal of damage to young lesbian and gay people.

She's a fundamentalist Calvinist, and probably operating from some twisted idea of Augustinian anthropology.

Just keep in mind even in this day and age, some people want to believe the world is flat. This isn't that different. Some people will reject the findings of science and human experience simply because it doesn't fit their narrow religious dogma.

The evidence seems to be that Rosaria was probably a straight or bisexual professor, with a head full of critical theory, who was a political lesbian and decided to convert to a conservative Christian identity that excluded the possibility of same-sex relationships.

Matthew Vines has an interview with Tim Whitaker of The New Evangelicals where he discusses Rosaria Butterfield's explicit radical feminist political lesbianism, and how it doesn't fit with the experience of most gay people, where sexual identity isn't seen as a political statement, as it is with political lesbianism.
