David conquered Rabbah, the royal citadel of the Ammonites in (NIV) 2 Sam 12:

31 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes, and he made them work at brickmaking. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
The Ammonites worked for David.

and put [them to work]
וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (way·yā·śem)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 7760: Put -- to put, place, set

with saws,
בַּ֠מְּגֵרָה (bam·mə·ḡê·rāh)
Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singular
Strong's 4050: A saw

King James Bible translated this verse differently:

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
The Ammonites were executed.

The original Hebrew could be translated either way. On Biblehub, 17 versions used "work"; 10 used "under".

David did not occupy the Ammonite cities. I think he executed the inhabitants and left.

Parallel account in (NIV) 1 Chronicles 20:

3 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
King James Bible:

And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
cut
וַיָּ֨שַׂר (way·yā·śar)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 7787

with saws,
Strong's 4050: A saw

H7787 appeared only once, and its meaning was obscure. On Biblehub, 17 versions used "work", and 18 used "cut."

Both H7760 and H7787 were ambiguous, so translators had to interpret them. I think execution makes a bit more sense.

If the Bible was set in 2024, David would use a chainsaw. Well hey, forced labor is almost as bad.
