  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's not surprising.
Given how half the country buy into ludicrous conspiracies hook line and sinker.

It's probably time to begin pushing Critical Thinking in the classrooms again.

IQ started falling in Europe before the US. It seems the US has finally caught up. It doesn't seem to be due to immigration, as countries that have less immigration have sometimes had more average IQ drop. It also doesn't seem to be due to dysgenic mating (eg, Idiocracy), as we can see IQ drops within the same family (younger siblings vs. older siblings).

I wonder if it's due to the changing nature of kids' free time. When I was growing up, we played with actual toys, blocks, Legoes, board games, that sort of thing. We also had actual physical books to read. Now days, kids are spending time in front of cell phones or tablets, and probably spend alot less time reading.

Right before you posted this I was going ask you why your thread title is about America when this study is about Norway.

Also, the article says "Similar studies in Denmark, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia have demonstrated a similar downward trend in IQ scores,..." Maybe it's just me, but that sounds a bit Eurocentric. I'd like to hear how IQs are doing in parts of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

It doesn't seem to be due to immigration, as countries that have less immigration have sometimes had more average IQ drop.
Do you have some more info about that?

Since FireDragon76 is standing on American soil, perhaps he/she has inadvertently proven the point without the aid of any research?

Humor. It was just humor, FireDragon76

I'm sure your examples have something to do with it.

It might also be that we're no longer being driven by the twin pincers of the Cold War and the Space Race against Russia to buoy up students' science and math skills in the Public School's curricula, as we we're doing after Sputnik was launched in 1957.

Of course, as you've said, the onset of the WWWeb and its social media have likely served to dampen the public's IQ further.

Edit: ... then too, there's less desire among younger people to attend college because the cost/benefits just aren't there anymore.

It's the failed education systems along with too much time spent on frivolous things ... the internet can be used as a tool to gain knowledge or it can be used as no benefit.
Mostly the kids watch a succession of 10 second clips on tiktok.

The bible belt states will ban that course.

Yes, that's probably not far from the truth of it, making it a sad academic situation for everyone involved.
