In a more light hearted news Japan is getting a new set of bank notes. Looks great and can't wait to get some when I next visit.

I was fully expecting something cute on the bills. Mildly disappointed. But still interesting
Yeah, I was expecting Spike Spiegel (my avatar from Cowboy Bebop) or some anime character on the bank notes. By the way, this is an article of who the people are on the Japanese currency: Who are the people on Japanese yen banknotes? | Time Out Tokyo

Oh wait, someone did that (fake bill of course):

What? No Hello, Kitty??
Yes, for one iconic example.

Japan makes everything into a cute animal, so why not bank notes. Look, here's a cute washing machine from a cheap hotel I stayed at in Fukuoka:

Nice. I should try Evangelion, cos I heard good things about that anime.
It's a classic for a reason. I used to have the series and End of Evangelion on VHS. I do need to watch the reimagined movies though, heard they are good too. For newer stuff, if you haven't already seen it, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is the best 28 episodes I've seen in a while.

And I'm personally not satisfied that no Vocaloids made it to the bills.

I will try it out. Got a lot of live actions shows to finish first. My library has free DVD rentals, so I will use that.

I take an interest in Japan news because a few years ago I bike toured around Kyushu and had an amazing time.

That is pretty cool. I wish I had some Japanese friends to talk to, and ask about their culture. :)

Yes, bike touring is a great, eco-friendly way of exploring a city. Hopefully Kyushu had plenty of bike racks. Not all cities (at least in the US) are very bike friendly.

Funny you should ask. Fukuoka, the biggest city on Kyushu, requires you to use official bike parking facilities in the city center. But they are so ridiculously complicated that my local tour guides (I did a half day guided bike tour of the city to start out my trip) said they couldnt even figure them out. Other than that I loved urban biking in Fukuoka.

The rest of the almost 3 weeks I was on my own making a big loop around Kyushu through countryside, mountains, and other cities, where you can park your bike wherever you want so long as you arent inconveniencing anyone.

Wow, the central city's bike racks look confusing. In other countries, especially the countries inside of the EU, the bike racks are next to the buildings. :)

Now, European Union member states have adopted legislation that establishes minimum bicycle parking standards for residential and non-residential buildings.

From: Two bike parking places per apartment for new buildings in the EU

I'm surprised that Tezuka Osamu didn't make it since he is the grandfather of manga and anime. Billion dollar industry today. But I know bill usually go for people who are more historically significant in the mainstream term.
