President Zelensky told journalists on Tuesday that 450,000-500,000 new soldiers were needed but achieving this was a "sensitive issue".

This comes as Ukraine's recent counter-offensive appears to have stalled.

Kyiv has also seen setbacks in provisions of aid, with US Republicans blocking a $61bn (€55bn; £48bn) military package and Hungary stopping an EU financial deal worth €50bn ($55bn; £43bn).

In an analysis of figures from EU statistics agency Eurostat in November, BBC Ukrainian found that some 768,000 Ukrainian men aged 18-64 had left the country for the EU alone since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Are you not concerned that Russia's ambitions to rebuild the "Soviet Bloc" are being hampered by recalcitrant Republicans who are Putin sympathizers?
Every penny we spent on Ukraine, without the involvement of our troops, has decimated the Soviet Army. It has endured huge losses in personnel and equipment.
It has a one dimensional oil-based economy--which is heading for obsolescence.

Given Russia's actions, they have not exactly tried to win over the Ukranians. Most people hate their abusers.

Consider N. and S. Korea. They are the same race and culture---but do you think it would make S. Koreans like Kim Jung Un?

Perhaps you need to read the news, Russian Missiles on Sat Dec 29, 2023 and today Tuesday Jan 2, 2024, and you claim the Russian army is decimated, smiles!

Kiev was the target of both missile strikes over the past 4 days, it won't be long until Zelensky is flying off into exile and a friendly Russian government is installed by Putin (Reality)

I've come to realize these are all examples of social hierarchies that western Christians feel like they need to abolish. They see these all as anti-liberal authoritarian structures that need to be reduced down to a purely open society of liberal democracy. They believe that one's faith must only exist privately as an individual consumer choice, and that modeling anything socially is evil because it violates the rights of the individual.

Liberal Democracy... or "Liberty" or "Freedom" is considered to be a sacred or divine force worth shedding blood over. It's basically the civil religion of the American Revolution. A Revolutionary Faith. They view monarchy as an evil to be violently crushed, even though the apostles said to Honor the King. It's a universal "spirit of democracy" that has been attributed to divine providence, and so they feel the need to crusade against any 'closed society' in the world that is not on board with pure liberal democracy.

I've been greatly disturbed to learn about this, and has made me question the entire Protestant tradition that I was brought into.

I've mentioned somewhere else I have a feeling that the wars are over ideology. For years the West tries to impose climate policies, culture changes, and government onto the eastern bloc and they aren't having it. Russia is a major oil exporter and climate policies will hurt their economy. China talks of going green while their actions show differently, and our consumer dollars are enriching them and they are laughing to the bank. I bet half the people here doesn't realize we are still buying oil from Russia, where's the outrage, it's plain lunacy.

We all worry about other governments meddle in our political affairs but are blind or ignorant to us doing the same in Ukraine and the East. The USA has become an arrogant nation.

Totally ideological... it is Open Society versus Closed Society

Inidividualized, atomized, universal liberal democracy versus.... basically anything else.

A society that says men should be the leaders, or a society that upholds traditional marriage, and especially a society that recognizes an actual particular God (instead of a potential pluralized 'unknown god')... all examples of closed societies that are considered evil authoritarian structures to be crushed by the armies of liberal democracy / open society.

The 'open society' says all hierarchies must be distilled down to individual consumer choice. One global marketplace of individual desires. A boy wants to become a girl? That's his individual right. That's "liberty and freedom". That's the Free Market. That's Sacred Democracy.

I've been saddened to learn that this is the basic ideology underpinning both liberal AND conservative churches in the west.
