  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jamie Raskin has entered the chat

"Let me get this straight.

After wailing and moaning for ten months about Hunter Biden and alluding to some vast unproven family conspiracy, after sending Hunter Biden a subpoena to appear and testify, Chairman Comer and the Oversight Republicans now reject his offer to appear before the full Committee and the eyes of the world to answer any questions that they pose?
They're appearing to learn from being embarrassed the last few times their witnesses at their hearings said there was nothing of substance to any of the GOP's claims.

Of course the right thing to do would be to stop making those baseless claims rather than trying to hide the information which shows how empty they are, but hey, progress is progress even if it is slow.

Comer: Not like that!

First brother James Biden ducks impeachment deposition — for now

President Biden’s brother James won’t appear for questioning Wednesday as specified in a House Oversight Committee subpoena — after his legal team argued there was “no justification” for the demand.

House Republicans believe James Biden ultimately will comply with the subpoena, but it’s unclear when that might happen

Hunter Biden's lawyer says again that president's son will only testify publicly

In a letter to Rep. James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the offer to testify publicly was in response to Comer's own remarks on at least three occasions. Comer previously rejected Biden's Nov. 28 offer to publicly testify before his panel, saying any testimony would have to be behind closed doors.

Hmmm... I see a couple potential different motivations for that. But I'm not sure "who's trying to play who" so to speak.

Possibility 1) Comer wants it to be "behind closed doors" so they can employ a little "selective omission" when they report their "findings" back to their allies in conservative media while conveniently leaving out adjacent statements or context (and don't want media outlets from the other side to be able to quickly and easily fact check them)

Possibility 2) Hunter Biden's been advised to only accept testifying in public hearings, because that gives the person on the "hot seat" a little extra leeway with being able to refuse to answer specific questions under the pretenses that certain things aren't allowed to be disclosed publicly.

My gut tells me that Option 1 is the more likely scenario given how hard Comer wants to be able to "Bust a Biden on something", but I'm just considering all possibilities.

Yeah, it's quite possible it could be a little of A and a little of B.

Only reason why I'm leaning a little more toward it being Comer trying to pull the fast one is simply due to how poorly some of these past "Bust-A-Biden" public hearings have gone for the GOP, where there are certain things, out of context, that would've made their case sound somewhat convincing, except for the fact that cross-examination was done (also public) and shot a bunch of holes through their assertions.

Speaker Johnson: “If you don’t like the president, he goes on a ballot again after four years ... We have an election in 11 months. Let the people decide this.”

Oh wait, that was in December 2019 (7:45 mark or so).

In response to questions from CNN, Johnson’s office said: “The Speaker’s commentary on the House Democrat impeachment effort was true then and is true now. The 2019 impeachment of President Trump remains infamous for using the thinnest evidentiary record and narrowest grounds ever to impeach a President.

Whereas today there is no evidence or grounds at all?

Ahead of House GOP vote on impeachment inquiry, Hunter Biden defies subpoena

Hunter Biden will not appear for a closed-door deposition Wednesday, defying a subpoena from House Republicans who are investigating the Biden family’s finances.

“I’m here to testify at a public hearing today,” Hunter Biden said in a statement outside of the Capitol on Wednesday morning. “Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics … or hear what I have to say.”

[While that's some posturing and grandstanding... it's pretty good posturing and grandstanding.]

The decision comes ahead of an expected vote in the GOP-led House later Wednesday to formally authorize an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, intended to strengthen the oversight powers of lawmakers.

Some vulnerable Republican lawmakers previously were resistant to voting on the matter of impeachment — and remain opposed to proceeding with formal articles of impeachment given the underwhelming body of evidence Republican investigators have amassed. But after White House special counsel Dick Sauber issued a Nov. 17 letter challenging the legitimacy of the inquiry and demanding that subpoenas and requests for interviews with Biden family members and White House aides be rescinded, GOP lawmakers rallied behind the idea of strengthening the House’s legal hand by moving to authorize the investigation with a vote.

What info would Hunter have and be asked about that isn't allowed to be aired in public? Is he alleged to be in possession of classified information?

There are certain things (given his various high ranking positions in the private sector) that I wouldn't be surprised involved NDAs that would be allowed in closed-door settings with subpoenas, but would violate the NDA to disclose in a public setting with press cameras rolling. Any lawyer worth their salt would try to use that to their advantage and file motions to make sure their clients didn't have to answer those questions in a public setting.

But as I noted, I see that as a less likely option compared to the first option, which is that Comer wants it to be closed door so that he can make some "selective omission" when relays information back to the the public and his allies in the conservative media sphere.

GOP Votes Down Amendment Making Impeachment Inquiry ‘Open and Transparent’

On Tuesday in the House Rules Committee meeting drafting the impeachment inquiry, Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA) said, “all we’re asking for is the gentleman to put back in the words ‘open and transparent.’ For some reason Republicans deliberately removed it. None of us can figure out why.”

At that point, Rules Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) called the vote, and Republicans, who have the majority, voted down the amendment to require the impeachment inquiry to be “open and transparent.”

From 2019:

  1. SEC. 2. OPEN AND TRANSPARENT INVESTIGATIVE PRO-

  3. 8 MITTEE ON INTELLIGENCE.

  2. 16 mittee shall designate an open hearing or hearings
  3. 17 pursuant to this section.

Current version:

I know why - Even some Republicans admit Biden ‘impeachment’ hearing is a disaster

It's really fascinating though.
Once you've seen the professionalism carried out by the Democrats in their two impeachment hearings and trials of D Trump, full of convincing evidence and testimony and being specific with their charges/accusations, specific with their incidences of things to investigate.

And then you see the Republicans try to do this and theirs just looks like a total clown show, with some guy running around all the media TV shows saying he has a mountain of evidence and then when it comes to his public hearing in congress, all of his handpicked witnesses say they have no evidence at all. Now they formally open up an impeachment of Joe Biden, but they have no incident, no whistleblower, no reason at all to investigate Joe. This is the very definition of a witch hunt. Anyway, I really do hope that they have more public hearings etc. They have looked very foolish so far.

If they're open and transparent, Republicans won't be able to appear on Fox and lie or Tweet falsehoods to the base.

I don't know, the last set of hearings was open and we all know what happened after that.

Hunter doesn't get to create his own preferred parameters for his deposition.

He was called for a deposition; a deposition has a full transcript by the way. Every word he, or anyone else says, even "um", will be transcribed.
