Hello,

I wanted to share how some people see the world. I am talking physically. These people see faces in real physical things. I will use paintings that do a great job of portraying how these people see the world.

The paintings are done by Octavio Ocampo. Enjoy!

Sir, this is Physics & Life Sciences...

The art forum is over there ---->

You're right on one level, but obviously the OP is making an allusion to Gestalt Psychology. Whether or not this thread belongs over in the Art forum or here in the Sciences remains to be "seen." :p

... if we can link the Gestalt Psychology up to some thing that Leonard Susskind has said, then we probably have a thread that's pertinent for the Sciences forum.

Otherwise, I'd have to guess which way I'm suppose to "see" the purpose of your OP.......................being that you're an atheist and all.

What are you wanting to imply about "how some people see the world"?

Yes, when paintings are designed to look like a face, sometimes people will see a face.

This is a scientific post, it just uses paintings to convey the message.

The purpose is education.

Well, I'm one of those persons who says he doesn't easily see things one way or the other, at all times. Maybe I'm just unobservant. Maybe I'm stupid. I don't know. Or maybe I just prefer Realist art over Abstract, Gestalt designs.

Yes, the human brain is good at recognising patterns.
Very true. The scientific term is apophenia. Which is the tendency to find patterns in random objects even when no such pattern exists. It's apparently a function of the temporal lobes of the brain. Which was discovered when patients suffering temporal lobe damage became unable to recognize family members and friends. A well-known example of apophenia is the "face" on Mars. Which was photographed by the Viking satellite back in the late 70s. It was actually just a random confluence of sunlight and shadow on some surface rock formations.

A related concept to apophenia is pareidolia. Which is the tendency to find deep meaning or significance in random patterns. An example of pareidolia is when someone saw the face of Jesus on a piece of toast, and believed it's a sign of the 2nd coming.

It's suspected that the pareidolic mindset is also why some people readily accept and believe in conspiracy theories.

Sorry for going off-topic.

You mean people seeing things that aren't actually there... such as conspiracy theories... isn't what this thread is actually about?

Dang, because I have a whole list of things that fall into that category, such as NDE's, miracles, and divine revelation. I guess that it's just a case of me seeing things again.
