I've been watching some of Ray Comfort's YouTubes... He's quite funny.

He says that we are saved because Jesus paid the fine. He paid the fine on the cross for the debt of death that we owe for our sins.

... Except, he didn't. If a sinner deserves everlasting torment in hell... and that multiplied by millions of saved.... That's a lot of time in hell.

But Jesus said to the thief on the cross that he would be with him in heaven that very day... That doesn't sound anything like the amount of suffering that even a single sinner has earned.

* So how does that work... Jesus seems to have got off very lightly!?

In short. appeasing God requires death. It's something that is found in all societies. The Greeks, Romans, and Jews sacrificed animals to appease their gods. The Mayans and Aztecs went as far as to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of human beings to appease their gods. Christianity holds that the sacrifice of Jesus was to atone for sin, i.e., to appease God. Just like the thief on the cross, anyone can accept the sacrifice of Jesus, repent of their sins, be baptized for forgiveness of their previous sins, and participate in the sacramental life of the Church. So the sinner is absolved.

God accepted what Jesus accomplished (the sacrifice for sin) on our behalf.

And, I am assuming that you meant the malefactor got off easy, Not Jesus ….But, if you meant Jesus I am wondering what it would take for you to think differently ….Maybe the picture below will give insight into getting off easy… It’s a depiction based on biblical scripture, of what Jesus would have looked like after nearly 40 hours of torture and interrogation.

Additionally … both the thieves cast the same in his teeth (Mat 27:44). It was one of the malefactors that asked Jesus to “remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom”. (Luk 23:39 - 42).

And Jesus said unto him…Luk 23:43 Verily I say unto thee To day … thou shalt be with me in paradise.

Jesus never said heaven..... Paradise will be here on earth at the conclusion of Revelation.

Neither of them went to paradise that day …Jesus was in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights…. the malefactor will be resurrected and will be in paradise with Jesus When Jesus returns As King of Kings.

I meant Jesus... What ever suffering Jesus underwent it was far less than I would undergo... So how is the debt paid. If I owe a million and my saviour gives a penny.... Well that doesn't sound legally sound.
Those pictures look painful, but many humans experience even worse. Jesus wasn't the first or the last to get that treatment... still mild compared to eternal flames... This debt still stands surely? How did Jesus get away with paying so little... If he had only paid for my sin alone he would have suffered far more.

How can this be?

You the non-believer do not go to hell (lake of fire) because of your sin. Why because your sin debt has been paid, not only yours but everyone has ever lived.

You go to hell (lake of fire), because you do not have what is required to live with God in eternity. Which is the life of God and the only way to receive The Life of God is by belief in Jesus.

It sounds like you have a better way for redemption … maybe you can talk it over with God or god and submit that for review. I am perfectly happy with the plan that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ implemented for the believers’ salvation.

But if you are going to make comparisons you really need to get a better understanding of hades, sheol, Gehenna, Katakaio, and Tartarous. Those are the words translated into the English word Hell in the Bible, all of which carry a different meaning. There is no burning forever, that comes from Greek mythology where Hades was the god of the underworld and his name came to represent this fictitious place that we understand as Hell. The Septuagint was a second century B.C. Greek translation of the Old Testament, and in it the word Hades was chosen as the counterpart to the Hebrew “Sheol” ….which additionally distorts this fictitious place ….. In short …it is not burn forever, it’s burned up and gone (no existence).

The Fire That Consumes …By Edward W. Fudge …. I have been told is a really good book that goes into some depth on this subject.

It is eternal Justice.
Just as it was "just" for all humanity to be condemned for the sin of one, so to it is just for all mankind to be redeemed by the righteousness of one.

Romans 5:12-19 KJV
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Thank you, that makes sense of it
