  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

California creates race-based missing persons alert system: 'Ebony alert'

This is a good thing.
This is a good thing.

According to the Black and Missing Foundation, cited by Bradford, 38% of missing children reported in the United States are black, and a recent human trafficking report found 40% of sex trafficking victims were black women.
Bradford said that black children are often classified as "runaways" as opposed to "missing" and do not receive an Amber Alert or media attention.
The "Ebony Alert" allows law enforcement to tell State Highway Patrol to activate highway signs notifying motorists of a missing person if the investigating agency believes it would help find the child or young adult. Bradford also says it "encourages" media outlets to disseminate information about the missing person.
I am against all forms of racism.
That's great! This is not an example of racism.

As usual the politicians try to solve problems with half-measures. This does not go far enough. They need two alerts - one for dark skinned blacks and one for light skinned blacks. And another alert for those in between light and dark. And two more for those in between dark and medium and those in between light and medium, and then four more for those...well you get the picture. We need more categorization, more segregation, more alerting alerts.

The categorisation of alerts your looking for already exists although not in quite the racial way you're seeing it.

This is from the OP's WaPo article:

California has other similar alert systems, including the Amber Alert for missing children generally, Blue Alert for people who attack law enforcement, the Silver Alert for missing seniors and people with disabilities, and the Feather Alert for missing Native Americans.

From here: California signs Ebony Alert law to combat gaps in finding missing youths of colour

“Today, California is taking bold and needed action to locate missing Black children and Black women in California. I want to thank the Governor for signing the Ebony Alert into law,” Sen Bradford said in a statement.

He added: “Our Black children and young women are disproportionately represented on the lists of missing persons. This is heartbreaking and painful for so many families and a public crisis for our entire state. The Ebony Alert can change this.”

Mr Bradford said that Black youth do not receive the Amber Alert or media attention when they go missing because they are disproportionately classified as “runaways” in comparison to their white counterparts.'

The co sponsor of the bill, Bradford also stands with you Valleta, against racism. I needn't point out that he is black.

Also from your own link:

'The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People California Hawaii State Conference also helped usher the bill through passage.'

They stand with for you as well. As we all do. Thanks for letting us know that something is being done.

Making light of abducted children and human trafficking to own the libs.

Man, the list of things I never expect to see on Christian Forums grows shorter every year.

But we all know what would have happened if this scheme had been proposed and a Democrat had rejected it as racist. We all know exactly what would have happened.

This oddly includes women up to age 24....often called adults.

As for being classified as "runaways" more often....that's certainly interesting if true, but it doesn't state they are incorrectly classified as runaways.

What would have happened?

Would they risk not being reelected?

I realize there is a lack of widespread media coverage of missing black women and children as compared to white women and children, but these articles fail to mention that explicitly. It's also not clear why having a separate alert will lead to greater media coverage, it could just lead to unforseen consequences, such as stigmatization.

"Silver" alert at least gives people notification of why the person is missing, almost always because they have dementia.

What I find interesting is that there is not a single critical thread on CF or article from the OP's source about Feather Alerts implemented last year in California explicitly for indigenous missing persons.

Do the same for black people even explaining the reasoning and need for it and it's like a little honey pot for criticism.

That's what I find interesting.

That sounds like it's a problem with the media representation of black children, not Amber Alert per se. According to this website, African-American children are over-represented in Amber Alert statistics:

Once again black people are being segregated.
'Police have asked people to be on the alert for a young child that went missing this morning in the Bay area. It is feared she may have been abducted. She is described as being 7 years old, black, wearing a red...:

'That's disgraceful! Black people are being segregated! The police are racist!'

No need to put black in the description since it's a blacks only alert. She was last seen near this sign:

Perhaps being an Australian you're not familiar with Jim Crow colored people only segregation.

BTW my first post was tongue-in-cheek. I thought you were supposed to be really good at detecting that.

I just don't get how this helps. The article states:

"California is taking bold and needed action to locate missing black children and black women in California,” Democratic state Sen. Steven Bradford, who led the legislation, said in a press release.
And:
"The "Ebony Alert" allows law enforcement to tell State Highway Patrol to activate highway signs notifying motorists of a missing person if the investigating agency believes it would help find the child or young adult. Bradford also says it "encourages" media outlets to disseminate information about the missing person
."

Doesn't the Amber alert already do that? How does changing the name from Amber to Ebony make them more likely to be found? How is this "bold" action?
