  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The senator said Democrats have signaled they’re not interested in bringing back mask rules, so “we’re going to hold them to their word.”

“We tried mask mandates once in this country. They failed to control the spread of respiratory viruses, violated basic bodily freedom and set our fellow citizens against one another,” Mr. Vance, a Republican, said. “This legislation will ensure that no federal bureaucracy, no commercial airline and no public school can impose the misguided policies of the past.”

So, how's this work? Which days do Republicans like low-level autonomy with a small federal footprint and which days do they like strong federal control?

*looks at calendar* Can I mark down Tuesdays as being anti-federalist? "Total Control Tuesdays" has a nice ring to it. If we have that follow "Mises Mondays", we can start off each week with a real jolt and keep everybody on their toes.

ETA: Derp, I should have read the whole article first. This would only ban federal mandates, not mandates at the school level. I’m leaving this up because I still think “Mises Mondays” is funny.

I skimmed the text of the bill, and I didn't see any reference to COVID. So I think this bill means that no matter what epidemics may occur in the next year, and no matter how those epidemic diseases are spread, masks can't be required in public spaces.

Given how COVID took us by surprise, I have no idea what 2023/2024 might hold. I wouldn't want to restrict public health measures until I know what diseases we might be facing.

Banning mandates is not the same thing as preventing people from doing things. Just because they ban mask mandates does NOT mean that you are not permitted to wear a mask it means that you cannot be required to do so.

This only applies to the fedral government it does not apply to states, local governments or private businesses.

I can't speak for Liberal Republicans; but as a Conservative it has nothing to do with the day of the week for me. It comes down to the few and enumerated powers outlined in the Constitution.

Can you speak for all Democrats? Do they care about staying within their Constitutional bounds; or are they all for de facto Authoritarianism; so long as it suits their agenda du jour?

Can I infer from this that you don't approve of Sen Vance's measure?

I am for if a person wants to wear a mask fine, I am not for making all people wear mask.
I never believed that me wearing a mask protected anybody else (especially when was not coughing or sneezing to begin with) , a person wants protection then wear a mask.

Good. Mandates are never required for things that actually make logical sense. For example, virtually all older people stayed home and distanced once learning that there was a virus that appeared to be affecting older people more severely.

Fauci himself said masks weren't necessary and then flipflopped. Right on the BOXES it says that the mask does not protect from viruses. (Possible exception, N95 IF worn tightly and correctly - which few did, other than perhaps some medical people).

Seems idiotic to blanket-ban a measure that could afford protections we'd all want in the right circumstances.
Banning a mandate is not the same as banning masks. Wear all the masks you want. Anyone can wear one or five right now and anytime he wants. No one is going to stop anyone.

But isn’t a ban against mandates, tantamount to mandating what options future public health officials have to work with?
Sounds great!
Let’s limit our options before we know what the dangers might be!
Brilliant.

If I were Democrats, I'd call his bluff and make him agree to a "grand bargain" type of measure including other things that violate basic bodily freedom, cause conflicts between fellow citizens, and check all the same boxes as masks.

IE: I'd say "okay, if you're saying that governments don't have the ability to tell someone they have to put a piece of cloth over a body part they don't want to based on perceived risks or morals of other people...fine, no more public anti-nudity laws", and see if he goes for it.

Certainly if asking people to wear a piece of cloth over their mouth when they don't want to is violating basic bodily autonomy, the same would be true of asking a woman who doesn't want to wear a piece of cloth over her nipples at a public pool or beach, right?

Both cause chaffing, both can disrupt breathing if worn too tight, both are requiring someone to wear something just to make someone else feel comfortable.

Think he'd agree to it?

A mask could keep a airborne phlegm ball from hitting me in the eye; but if someone is coughing up phlegm; he should probably stay home.

Im talking about banning the mandate. Its a tool that could be really important regardless of how you felt about it in during covid.
