Store owner allegedly killed over hanging Pride flag in Lake Arrowhead (California) - Shooter killed by police

San Bernardino County deputies responded to a shooting at the Mag Pi clothing store located at 28938 Hook Creek Road in Cedar Glen around 5 p.m.

Arriving deputies found the victim, Laura Ann Carleton, 66, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

While investigating, detectives learned the suspect made “several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store before shooting Carleton.”

Carleton is survived by her husband and nine children.

(The possible motivation is obviously very tentative and alleged at this point.)

The San Bernardino / Los Angeles area is an unusual place for someone to go off to that extreme over a pride flag, since they're quite prolific all around those parts.

That's a pretty broad brush you're using to suggest that LA County and San Berdoo County are equivalent.

It's been a while since there's been a statewide initiative, but when Prop 8 (banning SSM) passed by 52% of the vote in 2008, it passed by 67% in San Bernardino County and was 50/50 in LA.

Actually, there are a lot of anti LGBT people in San Bernardino / Los Angeles area. And there's a lot of people, that are accepting of the LGBT people. Also, some people keep their politics quiet, around Conservative. Because if you don't, the Conservative will lash out. And this what happens And I'm sure in some areas. The opposite happens.

The Lake Arrowhead area is part of San Bernadino County, but it is far different from most of the county.

I find it surprising that something like this happened near Lake Arrowhead. I would not find it at all surprising if it had happened in the flatlands of San Bernardino.

I live San Bernardino. And there not a lot of pride flags here. We keep our politics private. Conservatives are louder. So, when I talk to them. I don't indulge much with them.

Lake Arrowhead is mostly inhabited by vacationing Angelenos.

At any rate, it is a despicable crime and a reminder to all the naysayers that homophobia is alive and well.

When a clothing store opened in Cedar Glen, Calif., in the summer of 2021, the owner hung a Pride flag at the entrance, her friends recalled. Whenever someone would tear down the flag, owner Laura Carleton would raise another one.

But after someone complained about the flag on Friday, the encounter turned deadly.

Carleton was one of the largest donors to Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ and attended the organization’s Pride boat parade in June, Clevenger said. A section of Mag.pi was dedicated to rainbow-colored products, and she displayed rainbow candles by the cash register, he said.

But some community members were still resistant, he added, and took down Mag.pi’s Pride flag multiple times.

I wouldnt be so quick to grant the killer "insanity". There's lots of stable people who are poisoned by bad ideology to the point they think theyre actually doing the right thing with acts like this.

Of course, "the case is still under investigation".

Yes, I live in San Bernadino, they still have original 1st original McDonald on 1398 N E St, San Bernardino. I drive pass it, when I pick up my brother. I live on route 66 Foothill Blvd. Close to Rialto.

Travis Ikeguchi, 27, was responsible for shooting Laura Ann Carleton, 66, to death after "yelling many homophobic slurs" about the store's Pride flag Friday, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said at a news conference Monday.

Officials said Monday that Ikeguchi — a resident of Cedar Glen, California — had a history of making posts that were critical of the LGBTQ community and law enforcement on multiple social media platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter.

In February, a woman got out of her car and approached a rainbow Pride flag hanging outside a New York City restaurant and set it on fire. In June, LGBTQ Pride Month, a Pride flag was taken down and burned outside a City Hall building in Tempe, Arizona. Again in New York City, Pride flags were torn down and damaged at least three times outside the Stonewall Inn — the site of the riots that are credited as the turning point of the modern LGBTQ rights movement — in June.

Someone didn't know how to interpret scripture apparently. He thought murdering someone was the way to eternal life through Christ..?

It's not an "either/or" thing. Some ideologies breed irrational anger and contempt. This is most likely similar to "Pizza Gate", but even more irrational, angry, and violent.

The killer was Japanese-American, and seems to be a Christian of some sort. That doesn't seem like it would be very common is Southern California. Most Japanese-Americans are Buddhists (who are generally more accepting of gay people), only a minority are Christians. Perhaps there was a degree of isolation, as well, which isn't good for ones mental health.
