President Biden’s repeated denials that he participated in his son’s foreign business transactions or ever spoke to his son about them have shifted in recent weeks amid an accumulation of evidence from bank records and eyewitness testimony that show he likely played a pivotal role in securing the lucrative deals.

Mr. Biden opted to remain silent on Friday when reporters shouted questions at him about a new Justice Department special counsel investigation of his son Hunter Biden for crimes related to tax evasion, financial schemes and potentially for acting as an unregistered lobbyist for foreign entities.

The president has long denied involvement in his son’s business deals, but a House investigation has compiled evidence that Mr. Biden helped his family pocket millions of dollars by serving as the influential “brand” and popping in on phone calls and business meetings.

Mr. Biden, at an event Tuesday in Arizona, did not deny knowing about his son’s business deals but instead stated: “I never talked business with anybody.”

Yet some Republicans fear that a special counsel investigation is a device to whitewash President Biden’s purported involvement in pay-to-play schemes.

They point out that Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed as special counsel the prosecutor responsible for Hunter Biden’s botched sweetheart plea deal on tax and gun crimes.

Although the special counsel has the authority to investigate the Biden family’s lucrative foreign business deals and bring more charges against the first son or others, Republican lawmakers fear that giving that power to David Weiss, U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware, is all for show.

“This appointment is camouflage, and it’s a cover-up. I think it’s disgraceful,” Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Sen. Marsha Blackburn said Sunday that she supports the House opening an impeachment inquiry into President Biden because it would unlock additional powers to investigate his family ties to foreign business deals when he was vice president.

“It makes it more important because they’ll have subpoena power if they do the impeachment inquiry,” the Tennessee Republican said on “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.”

Ms. Blackburn accused special prosecutor David Weiss, who was appointed to probe Hunter Biden’s foreign business deals, and tax and gun crimes, of being a “collaborator.”
