  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump wrote it. But he never said it. Yet here we have audio of "Trump" making this pronouncement thanks to the pro DeSantis super pac.

This is not to beat up on DeSantis (though that may be perfectly justified). Its more about how we deal with this generally, as we're guaranteed to see this dirty trick as a feature of political campaigns if it remains legal.

Harry Shearer [SNL, The Simpson’s (Principal Skinner et. al.] has a weekly radio show which he skewered 45 with a series of promos for a “show” he called The Apresidentis, but came by the voice of the lead the old fashioned way.

Sounds a little like Stephen Hawkin doing an impresssion of Trump. But it's something that will improve. It needs to be banned.

On an associated problem, I'm sure we've all had phone calls by scammers who are looking to get financial information from you. It's been pointed out that one tactic now is just to keep you talking long enough so that they have enough speech so that AI can have you say anything. So instead of a text message that says 'Hey Dad, can you send some money to this account' (which hopefully you'd ignore), now you'll get a voice message from your daughter saying the same thing.

I think political ads are really a minor concern re believable voice fakes compared to other possibilities.

But Americans are so wound up about politics, I thought this might exemplify the issue in a way they care about.

In most countries with English-style common law, that kind of thing could be felonious, and there's more of a tradition of punishing gravely malicious and false speech. But it's harder to prosecute in the US, because we have the 1st Ammendment. However, they could easily open themselves up to lawsuits, at the very least.
