  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Isn't that a bit harsh?

Let's check the context, Matthew 12:
22 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”
These Pharisees have hardened their hearts so much that they stubbornly attribute the work of the Holy Spirit to the evil spirit.

31Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Stubbornly calling the Holy Spirit evil will not be forgiven.

32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
If a person keeps calling the Holy Spirit evil, he cannot be born of the Spirit. The Spirit will not dwell in him. He cannot be born again. It is self-condemning.

Mark 3:
28“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
They stubbornly accuse the Holy Spirit in Jesus as unclean. Persisting in calling the Holy Spirit evil is a specific case of blasphemy against the Spirit.

It's not about calling the Holy Spirit evil. The unforgivable sin is when we no longer listen to the Holy Spirit's voice convicting us of sin John 16:8 (breaking God's law 1 John 3:4, Romans 7:7) and we become rebellions towards Him and His law. Romans 8:4-8 Many do this without even realizing it. The unforgivable sin is being comfortable living in sin and no longer trying to gain victory over it through Jesus. John 14:15-18 Jesus came to save us from sin Matthew 1:21, not in them.

Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,

God tests His people and today we are in our trial. Will we hear His voice and listen to Him calling us, asking for us to obey Him through love and faith. 1 John 5:3 Romans 3:31

Thanks for the verses. This is how to do referencing in a scholarly manner:
  1. Display and indent the quoted verse.
  2. Bold the relevant keywords that are important to the point that you are making.
  3. Be concise and to the point.
This is what I do for others who read my posts. It is a standard high-school scholarship. If you practice this, I guarantee you: it will improve your analytical thinking. In any case, no one is required to do it.

The "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. This case of blasphemy is a specific one, called "the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees (who were not Christians) having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was casting out demons in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that Jesus had an unclean spirit and casts them out by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons. (Matthew 12:24; Mark 3:30) Jesus was very specific about what they did to commit "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" and these Pharisees who committed this unforgivable sin were not believers.

Huh? Your not a scholar you to tend to add allot of personal belief in your posts. If you can't answer it just say so. You post a verse that starts with "therefore" that means something came before it. Christ was not talking to the Church not talking to any Christian who was He talking to? Those that doubted who He said He was. Put it ALL together and you might see.

You are right. When we see therefore in text, we have to find out what it's there for?!

It implies it is drawing on the preceding. So if there wasn't a preceding, then we're left wanting, lol!

I'm sorry I meant to answer the OP also.

If Jesus is the Son of God, and God the Father is male gender, then perhaps a female gender is somewhere also? If the Holy Spirit is God the Fathers Wife, then I can understand how He could be sensitive to how people talk about the Holy Spirit.

I dunno if that's true but I was married and the thought occured to me and would wxplain it. The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth but we better respect Holy Spirit and fear and reverance for sure.

That's all this earthling can come up with.

Jesus did not say that to ordinary believers. Therefore it is not applicable to converted, born again believers in Christ. Jesus spoke to the unconverted, self-righteous, religious Pharisees who accused Him of casting out demons through the Prince of Demons.

So, to say that converted believers could commit the unforgiveable sin, is silly theology based on a misunderstanding of the exegesis of the passage.

By "therefore", are you using it in the first-order logical sense?
