  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

45 years ago, SCOTUS allowed Affirmative Action programs as a temporary solution to a problem. Thes results have been impressive as the Obama's noted. Barrack noted in his campaign that he didn't think that his advantaged children should be given such preferences. And this is the heart of the matter.
=========
The way to reduce discrimination based on race is to stop discriminating based on race. This idea is that of the Supreme Court.
==============
Harvard is majority-minority. There are lots of blacks in their class, lots of RICH blacks, many of whom got in based on their race. Berkeley has few blacks, though many minorities. They don't discriminate. Blacks simply go to Stanford. Berkeley also doesn't discriminate in favor of the poor.
===============
THE SOLUTION
Colleges should discriminate based on social factors, especially in favor of the economically disadvantaged. Under 40% of voters support discrimination based on race. I agree. The majority of Americans do indeed believe in a step up for the poor.

We're seeing time and time again that what the majority of Americans believe doesn't make it the right thing to do. There are too many people of all races that can't afford college... it's too high. Beyond that, if you haven't worked hard for a scholarship, you need to work hard at a part-time job to get through college. That's what I had to do. Stop with the gimmies, it's destroying us.

Affirmative Action was useful while it lasted, but it's about time to get rid of it, and the Supreme Court decision seems sound. Using discrimination to counter discrimination is a questionable approach in the first place, and it gets to be counterproductive after a while.

What we are seeing time and time again is the Supreme Court of the United States does not care what is best for the American people if it is dominated by conservative justices. Affirmative action is the only way thousands of black and brown students can get into 4-year colleges. What the Supreme Court wants to do is go back to the bad old days when 100% of college students were rich white men.

No, I do not believe high school students should be accepted at colleges just because they are black or brown. But this racist ruling means they lost their chances at equal opportunities because of systemic racial discrimination in lower education, housing, child care, and employment. To make sure everyone has an equal opportunity of going to college, we first need to solve the problems that forced Congress to make affirmative actions laws in the 1960s.

This is good news.

Only to white people.

Do you want everyone else to have zero chance of qualifying for college because of racial discrimination?

The Supreme Court shouldn't base their opinions on what is best for the American people. That's not their role. We have two other branches of government that are supposed to handle what's best for Americans. The Supreme Court's job is to decide whether laws are constitutional or not.

When they try to do what they think is best for Americans, it's called legislating from the bench. That's not a good thing. They need to try and be impartial as much as they can and just apply the US Constitution to the law.

They can't earn a scholarship??? It doesn't have to be Harvard. They can't work their way through college, even if it takes more than 4 years and hard work??? Why does everything have to be an easy gimmie now? This country is losing its backbone, among many other things.

Many provisions in the Constitution are what is best for the American people. One of them is the Equal Protection clause in the 14th Amendment. Is affirmative action not equal protection?

Think about the systemic racism preventing black and brown people from getting jobs and scholarships. What don't you understand about the extremely obvious, repeatedly proven fact racial discrimination in every facet of American life continues to exist?

When there is no such thing as discrimination against any human demographic anymore, we can talk about getting rid of gimmies.

No, it's not. It's discrimination based on skin color. It's done for a very good reason, to promote black representation to counter serious imbalances, but it's still discrimination. It's a violation of equal protection, since people who would otherwise be qualified are denied simply because of the color of their skin, to accommodate racial quotas.

Let us use the example of Harvard where whites consitute less than 40% of the student body.
====================================
What is the racial makeup of Harvard?

As of Fall 2020, the ethnic breakdown of Harvard undergraduates is approximately 39.6% White, 27.5% Asian, 10.8% Hispanic/Latino, 9.3% African American, 2.2% Native American/Alaskan Native/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 10.6% mixed-race or unknown (Data acquired from the Harvard College).May 4, 2023
====================================
IMO, the issue is NOT that colleges are not forced to take enough black students. Colleges are very mixed in most parts of the country. The issue is that colleges are for the RICH. Many, many of the black students are Harvard are from rich families. Having quotas that favor Barrack's and Michelle's students is NOT the answer.

If colleges were biased in favor of admitting poor students (especially poor urban students) and giving them scholarships, the result would be a HIGHER percentage of blacks. Obviously, removing the almost automatic admission of legacy students would be a step forward.

The biggest obstacle to job placement is not knowing someone in the organization doing the hiring, regardless of your color. There is no systemic racism... that is only liberal ballast for what is now their sinking ship.

If you graduated from high school, you know affirmative action laws were created because employers, schools, and everyone else was discriminating on the single basis of a person's skin color and without it no black or brown people would have any opportunities to go to schools and get jobs. If you want people to work hard for at least four years, you want affirmative action because that is the only way they will get jobs and college scholarships throughout the South and parts of Midwest.

There is not reason not to want black and brown people to get a college education and living wage job. That requires being accepted as a member of a "colorblind" society (one that does not care what color anybody's skin is). Sadly, racial discrimination continues to exist for many black and brown people. So we have no choice but to take affirmative action until racial discrimination permanently ends.

I disagree with your claim the decision was racist, just the opposite and long overdue

According to Fox News and OAN? Your own brain? Or real informational sources that only exist to help end discrimination against black and brown people?
I don’t know what OAN is

Any decision that prevents Americans who deserve to go to college and get living wage jobs obviously is racist. That includes this one because before affirmative action laws were passed in the 1960s, racial discrimination was much higher than it is now.

I am still waiting for someone who took American history in school to prove we would have racial equality in housing, schools, and employment anyway without affirmative action laws.
