  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Forbidden Fruit company is set to release another wave of distractions. The negative possibilities of this would be endless. If the Church is seeing less parishoners now because of livestreamed video liturgies, imagine if parishoners started creating their own AI augmented parishes to attend with their fellow "Orthobros" they meet online? This is sad and I pray that we don't fall into this pit. I've done my part in my family by getting rid of screens as much as possible. I have 1 work laptop, 1 personal laptop, my wife and I share a smartphone (with a dumbphone on stand-by in case we feel the need to downgrade), and my daughter has an iPad she received for Christmas (that we limit to 30 minutes per day). Lord help us and have mercy on us.

I'm not a fan of VR, but like every other tool under the sun it comes down to what it is used for. Teach your kids something called "self control" and you won't have much to worry about.

Since you mentioned streaming liturgies; the overall consensus amongst the laity, thankfully, is that streaming the liturgy is NOT a replacement for attending in person. Those who do stream liturgies are generally those who can not physically attend. The fear of "oh crap if we stream liturgies people won't come to church anymore" turned out not to be the case (thank God). As for the toxic internet Orthodoxy I will say this: the devil may have taken 1/3 of the angels with him, but that means 2/3 of them stayed. Which means that for every demon out there, there are at least two angels to deal with him. For every schmuck on the internet, there's at least a hundred saints in the real world.

Yes, this is what I hear from people too: literally nobody prefers a livestream to actually going. A livestream is accepted when the choice is between that and, like, lying in bed thinking pious thoughts. I exaggerate, but you catch my drift. Nobody thinks, "I don't need to go to church, this livestream is so excellent!". This is also "helped" by the production values of these streams generally being quite potato-like. Though I do appreciate being able to be a tourist on the occasions I'm not able to physically attend (or I sometimes may look in their past broadcasts on other days), I can peek in and "visit" other parishes where I know people, their choirs, ah, I've sung with these people before, John is still always flat at that part of the tone 1 troparion...

Augmented Reality has been around for a while now.
I know of several academics who have used the system for architectural visualisation of archaeological spaces.
This can be done quite well with pre-recorded actors playing a role in a space which is then re-enacted for the tourist when they visit a space.
The hardware used was the Microsoft HoloLens, which has been around since 2016.
I can not see what Apple is doing differently here, though I am sure the design of the product is very pretty, and the cost of the consumer unit is significantly lower than Microsoft's offering (albeit almost a decade after Microsoft's release)

I am currently in my post-grad in Architecture and I am exploring the application of Augmented Reality in the reconstruction of historic spaces through digital media.
This sort of work excites me, and I hope my applications are a far cry from some parent watching sitcoms whilst pretending to care for their offspring.
