  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I can't say I really know enough details. I have no problem with hunting and I have no problem with culling.

I DO have problems with unsafe gun usage or inappropriate hunting areas. I didn't bother to read the article but if these feral cats are out in the country, blast away.

In a city, that is unsafe.

I voted "not sure". (with the way the question was worded, I assume it was asking if I personally would do it, and not about a childrens hunting contest)

It depends on how much of a nuisance animal they actually are in the region in order to offer such an incentive and organize an actual culling effort.

I know in certain states here, there are cash rewards for turning in feral hog tails (and you're welcome to keep & use the meat), and they also have competitions around taking them out.

The justification for it being that the feral hogs do millions of dollars in damage to crops and farmland.

The fact that a hunting competition (of any kind) "draws backlash" from animal rights groups is no surprise. (they get bent out of shape over the hog hunts here too)

But I can see where the dynamics are a little different between feral hogs and feral cats.

1) You can eat the hogs (so shooting them isn't a complete waste)
2) The amount of damage they do to farmland is staggering (not sure the same is true for feral cats, I think there's is more of a problem of attacking peoples' pets and spreading diseases)
3) You're unlikely to mistake someone's pet for a feral hog...with feral cats, the visible distinctions between them and someone's pet cat are near negligible.
4) Given the risk of #3, seems risky to allow kids to make that judgment call and if feral cats do need to be culled, that should be left to the game department and/or experienced hunters. I don't think I'd be trusting 12-14 year olds (who are known to be impulsive and not make the best decisions) to be in charge of that process.
5) Difference in venue, feral cats usually live closer to cities, as to where feral hog hunts usually take place on wide open farms or hunting grounds, far away urban areas.

6) the kids would be using air rifles(from what I understand) which means unnecessary cruelty.

Or more precisely kids often use air rifles according to the article.
I could see where that would equate to "slower kill" (ie: more suffering for the animal)

New Zealand feral cat hunting competition for children prompts backlash

As a country kid and adult rural landowner, I regularly killed (by shooting and trapping) feral, cats, dogs, rabbits and the occasional fox. Australia has a major problem with feral animals killing or displacing native species or degrading land. Feral (and domestic) cats are a particular problem since they decimate small native species.

I would personally not hesitate to kill feral animals including cats.

I think it is both dangerous and stupid to encourage kids under 14 to even own a gun.

I would. If the feral cats present a threat to native animals such as birds and small reptiles. Cats are not an endangered species. The animals the feral cats kill however are. People only get upset because the predators are cats. Cats are pets in many societies. Should the predator be lets say rats there would be less backlash. But I'm objective, I know cats even domesticated ones kill many birds and other small animals annually. If they are not controlled there will be an extinction of native animals.

I wouldn't make it a competition though. But I would agree to offer cash for each hunt carried out by licensed hunters.
