Jordan Peterson had a Twitter spat with the Pope, of all people

It's almost amusing when an agnostic intellectual whose specialty is in lobster hierarchies, and trying to convince overgrown manchildren in their parents basements that cleaning up their rooms will make them into mythic heroes, attempts to school the Pope on Christian social teachings that are 2500 years old.

lol oh man. There's mansplaining and then there's whatever that was.

This hyper-individualistic flavor of Christianity is very much an American thing, mostly within the last century or two. If that's the entirety of Peterson's perception of Christianity, he should try some new podcasts.

He seems to think Christianity should be like an Axe commercial, but with more chariots and camels.

“You might think I’m overstating the case.”

lol, on the contrary. I haven’t waited this long for somebody to get to the point since the last time I tried to watch a Phish concert.

oh my gosh, 7 minutes in and he finally articulates a point.

“We want to work with you to make things better, to make life more abundant for you, your family, and your community.”

idk, that kinda sounds like #socialjustice to me.

Wait, he says that then ends by saying “quit saving the bloody planet”??? What is it he wants churches to invite men to do, exactly? Play paintball?

I haven’t listened to this guy much, and not at all in a long time. But wow, he really is just as vacuous as everybody says. He’s almost a parody of himself.

Good grief! It's all about social control and the downtrodden (sic) group he champions above all (young men).

He doesn't care whether anyone believes or not, whether they come to believe or not, become saved or not, become better people or not, etc.

The funny thing is, "saving the planet" is closer to how ancient Christian's understood Jesus' mission, than what he thinks Christianity should be. It's even in St. Paul's theology, though Protestant Evangelicals might have trouble seeing it.

Even the Scientologists prop themselves up in public to "Clear the Planet" (of body Thetans). At this point, I'd give them more credit than Peterson. (And their leadership belongs in jail.)

Has anyone seen the plot? Jordon appears to have lost it.

To quote something I have once read: Jordan Peterson is a dumb person's idea of a smart person.

lol, the only thing in there I heard that even remotely approached "smart" was the unnecessary verbosity that plagues most of the academics I know.

As long as you talk quickly and eloquently, that is enough to convince a certain group of people that you are making a very good point. Especially if the things they say stroke their ego or are things they already believe in.

Some are, some aren't. It just depends on how much they, like Socrates, are aware of their own ignorance.

The problem with Peterson is that he talks well past his area of expertise, and his political and social analysis is far too simplistic, as a result. Years ago when Peterson first came out with his "12 Rules", some people in the human potential movement were excited by that, as there was clearly a need to speak to young men about growing up, but after he went on a political crusade, most of them began to abandon the idea that he was contributing anything positive to the already toxic cultural discourse.

John Vervaeke, also a Toronto professor, takes off where Peterson left off, and he does so in a much more scientifically cogent manner. He also intentionally avoids becoming enmeshed in partisan politics, his focus is on helping people "waking up" to find some meaning in their lives beyond toxic cultural and political discourses.

Peterson's answer, on the other hand, is basically to try to silo young minds into reactionary politics, but once you look at his underlying worldview, you can see it's a hodge-podge of various ideas cobbled together haphazardly to justify a pre-existing bias. His own mental health problems are also proof he doesn't know what he's talking about. Vervaeke is calm and collected, and can talk to all sorts of people from different scientific, philosophical, or spiritual backgrounds in dialogue, but Peterson can only talk to people that already reinforce what he wants to hear, otherwise he just reflexively pushes back against what they have to say and doesn't really listen.

From the article

Perhaps Peterson’s Twitter intervention with Pope Francis represents a reminder to the more elderly hierarchy of the Church today that a programme of social justice seldom comes free from a totalitarian price tag.

When Peterson has been attacked by journalists irritated by his worldwide influence, Peterson points out the repeated conversations he has with people whose lives have been transformed by his influence and analysis. The numbers are enormous and constitute a genuine movement of societal renewal, with people saved from hopelessness and despair. This renewal movement began in the mind.

It would be strange if he did not try to remind the Church that if real personal and societal renewal can be ignited by a refreshed mind, it might be even more inspired by a renewed soul.

God’s people have often had to rely on eccentric sources to rediscover God’s better way. If Balaam could take advice from an opinionated ass, perhaps a pope can be helpfully informed by a loquacious pop psychologist.

I was going to say that Shapiro cannot honestly be taken seriously with that helium filled delivery that sounds like he's listing the conditions to be considered at the back end of a medical advert. But...I had an idea and called up one of his videos on Youtube, and cranked the speed back to 75%.

Yikes...he sounded quite normal. Still talked nonsense. But normally.

I tried 50%, but he just sounded a little drunk. Which kinda suited what he was saying.
