"Don't Wait Until The Last Minute"

(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)" 2 Corinthians 6:2

There is one thing I have noticed about the human nature-- we tend to put things off until the last minute. I tend to do it myself. I have some volunteers at my shop who are doing community service in order to "work off" their fines. I can always tell when it is the end of the month. My phone rings constantly with people asking to work because they have to have at least ten hours done before the end of the month. They have waited until the last couple of days to try to get those hours in. Some are able to, but some fall short.

Many people treat their eternity the same way. They are waiting until the "last minute" to get things right with God. Many are waiting until after they have lived their lives and finished doing all the "fun things" they had planned to do before giving their lives to the Lord. Some are waiting until their "death bed" to do it. Some are just waiting with the idea that "one day" they will do it.

These people are gambling with the state of their eternal souls. Just like the volunteers, they are hoping that we will say, "yes". They have it all figured out-- just wait, don't worry about it all month, get the hours in at the last minute, etc. But it doesn't always work like that. I have had to turn several down because I didn't need them. They waited too late.

We can't think that we have plenty of time to get things right with God. We are not promised tomorrow. We are not promised the next breath. We are not promised we will have a "death bed" opportunity. We are not promised to live to a "ripe old age". We only have now. We only have this moment. We only have this breath.

Are you waiting? Are you holding out until you have done all you want to do? Are you putting God off until you are ready? If so, you are taking a big chance. If so, you are on dangerous ground. If you are you may wind up falling short of eternity.

Have a great day. Don't wait until the last minute to get right with God. You aren't promised to have that last minute.

PASTOR JOHN MACARTHUR

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).“因我活着就是基督,我死了就有益处。”

In addition to Scripture, God has given us more than adequate spiritual resources to meet suffering and death.
Wall Street, the name synonymous with the American stock market and financial investing, is a place where confidence can rise and fall with great force and unpredictability, right along with the rising or sinking level of stock prices. Prices always se-em to even out, but who can be certain about how they will be have in the future?

The apostle Paul’s spiritual confidence was not based on the change ableness of financial markets but on truths that are stable and reliable. Yesterday we saw his confidence in God’s Word, and today we’ll look at three more reasons Paul could confront death confidently.
First, Paul had confidence in the prayers of other believers. But it was not a presumptuous confidence because he believed in asking others to pray (see Rom. 15:30). Paul was convinced that “the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James5:16).

Second, Paul was confident that the Holy Spirit would supply all necessary resources to sustain him through any suffering, even death. All Christians can have that same confidence:“ The Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep forwords” (Rom. 8:26).
Third, Paul had the utmost confidence in Christ’s promises. The apostle was sure that God had called him to a specific ministry (Acts 26:16) and that if he was faithful, he would never suffer shame (Mark 8:38). Jesus never abandons His sheep, no matter how bleak and frustrating their circumstances seem (John 10:27-28).
Our verse from Philippians summarizes Paul’s confidence and joy in spite of possible death. As long as he was serving Jesus Christ, he’d just as soon die because death frees the believer from the burdens of earth and lets him glorify Christ in eternity. We can rely on the same promises and provisions as Paul did and have his kind of joy. Jesus “is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever” (Heb. 13:8).

Suggestions for Prayer
  • Confess any ways in which you have a misplaced confidence.
  • Ask the Lord to reinforce in your heart a Pauline confidence that rejoices no matter what.
