Science and religion… everyone seems to have an opinion. They’re at war. They’re at peace. They don’t overlap. It’s complicated. Take the Science and Religion Quiz and work out where you stand… and why it matters!

Welcome to the Science and Religion Quiz

People have wildly different views on how ‘compatible’ science and religion are. However, much of what we think about this depends, in the first place, on what we think science is and what religion is. Your answers to those questions will shape – even predetermine – the answer to the question of how well they ‘get on’.
The Science and Religion Quiz not only ‘takes your temperature’ on the overarching question – whether you think science and religion are compatible – but it also explores what you think each one is.
In the process, it tries to help you understand not only what you think on this issue, but why – and why it matters. Because ‘science and religion’ is about more than a few narrow debating issues (like the Big Bang or evolution) but touches on our very understanding of ourselves and the world.

How the questions work

The quiz contains 40 statements. For each statement you are required to give one response out of the seven options available ranging from “Totally disagree” to “Totally agree” (as in the example below). Once you have completed all the questions on one page, click through to the next page, and continue. Once all statements have been answered, your results will be calculated and explained.
No personal data are taken or stored as part of the Science and Religion Quiz. You won’t be asked for your name, contact information or any other details. All we keep are the quiz results themselves so we can gather a cumulative picture for how the population stands on ‘science and religion’.

Interesting but I think the quiz is bad. How should a non-believer answer a question about how religious texts were "meant" to be taken? I don't know; I don't care. There are several questions like that rendering it "not good". If, for that question, they worded it "to get the most value out of religious text, one should take it figuratively" that'd be better. Now, you're asking me my opinion rather than asking me how I think other people thought.

Bah.

But, it's been a while since I took a quiz. So, I had a little fun.

That's an interesting rewording, and it changes the question, doesn't it? If you ask me (I'm a Christian), about various miracle stories in the Bible, whether they literally happened or not, I'd say yes to some of them, no to others, and maybe it doesn't always matter. But your question -- the figurative meaning of the miracle is almost always the important bit. Why is the author taking the time to include this particular miracle in his story?

I like your question better. :)

I ended up with this result, which the authors describe as "Faith is a virus, science is the cure: You think religion claims truth but you believe it is wrong, perhaps even dangerous."

Which, for the record, is not at all how I would describe the relationship between faith and science.

I think part of the problem is that I kept saying "it's complicated" to the questions. Is religion about belief or practice? well, are you asking about Christianity or Islam? Is belief in God necessary for religion? well, are you asking about Christianity or Buddhism? "Religion" is a really big category.

I had fun with the quiz, but now I want to go argue with the quiz designers. :)

“ Science is true, but religion has some value ”

Substantive

Functional
For you, science is the only (or main) way to the truth and religion is only really a cultural phenomenon, so the two can get on just fine. But you’re likely to add an important caveat to this: the two can get on just as long as religion doesn’t try and make any truth claims and sticks to what it does best – building community and helping others. When it comes to the job of understanding reality, it has nothing important to contribute. If you’re here, your temperature is probably a bit cool.

Most people and that includes most scientists have no idea that science like western civilisation is totally dependant on a Christian world view.

It is only Christianity that says that the universe is consistent.
That we are permitted to test and examine how the universe works.
Just as the 'rights' claimed and abused by society today are based on JudeoChristianity principals.

Interesting... it's a bit like a personality test that tells you what you believe. It's 99% accurate. Some questions weren't easy to answer so the "neutral" had to be chosen, which is probably why it's not totally accurate.

"You believe that religion is about something transcendent or spiritual or supernatural. You believe that religion is either about The Truth or at least about some truths. You also believe that science isn't the only way of accessing truth, and so there is space for religious truths and revelations. You recognise that there is potential for some tension here, but you do not see the need for hostility or a competition between science and religion. With that in mind you are more likely to find yourself on the ‘warm’ end of the science and religion thermometer."

Religion encourages beliefs .. I don't .. and science ain't perfect .. but its better than all the other ways.

Perhaps because you don't "encourage beliefs" the algorithm just calculated you were more scientifically minded than "religiously" minded. Religion is a broad term. I based my answers on Christianity (if that helps).

Very poor test. Looks like someone just came up with those questions off the cuff.

Science and Christianity is not in conflict whatsoever. But sometimes the science/history/philosophy has to catch up to the Bible.

I am protesting this test.
Science and Christianity are compatible, it is some vocal people (on both sides) who make it out not to be.
