Modern European society is increasingly reproductively sterile. For example, Germany has not been having enough babies to naturally replace its population numbers since the seventies. Obviously this coincides with the widespread use of contraception and indeed more recently abortion. 20% of German adults never reproduce and these will die alone in the main. People live according to the principle of their own comfort and well-being and children are regarded as unnecessary lifestyle choices by many. Is this a symptom of a deeper crisis in the church and a loss of hope and conviction? Christians are called to evangelize and to go and make disciples of all nations. Yet many in Europe get very angry when attempts are made to convert the masses. Our churches should be growing not shrinking, they should be looking outward and not inward. What is the reason for current sterility? What can be done about it?

Great post.

I would say that Christians need to insulate themselves from the culture and stop imbibing it. These dark forces are seeping into the churches, and that needs to stop. This primarily means raising our children in the faith and providing them with what they need to resist the culture of death. Secondarily, Christians need to have more children. Simple, but true.

Evangelization is great where it can be done, but it is an uphill battle in the post-Christian West. ...I suppose I am proposing something like Dreher's "Benedict Option." There are all sorts of battles that need to be fought at every level, but I think the internal growth of Christianity through childbearing and childrearing is the key.

We live in a non Christian society, that is hostile to Chritianity and to Christian morality.

People are governed by selfish desires.
That we who are Christian are also affected by societies influences is a sad reflection on us.

There needs to be greater teaching/preaching on biblical morality and less on ' we life by grace' as so often this is a licence of a sinful lifestyle.

As Christians we should be demonstrating our love for Jesus, each other and the lost.

I believe it has more to do with the change occurring in the social structure of Western society. We have entered into an age unlike those of our predecessors. The effect of leaving an agrarian dominant lifestyle may have its toll on us, too. I don't think we can stop it, but embrace the new changes that will inevitably come.
