Tribal and identify politics has infected and taken over the internet. To the point where it’s impossible to have any nuanced discussion about complex issues we face. If you find yourself saying “liberals always do Y” or “conservatives always do X” then congratulations you’re part of the problem. People just want to pick a side and that's it and avoid any nuanced or objective conversation. How is tribalism the way to go in society and why do people gravitate towards that more?

Because we are better at confessing the sins of others than our own.

I think the biggest problem is that the internet provide anonymity. You can say outrageous things without anyone knowing. Then in real life it becomes for difficult even tolerate people, even friends and family, who are on the opposing side. I'm liberal and I'm finding it harder to have discussions with conservative friends without it going down some illogical path. A lot of discussions simply become ad hominem attacks or "look at the other guy", or straw man attacks.

Because like sheep they have all gone astray? Or something like that.

Facebook did away with that illusion.

But other sites even this one? There have been posters that support anti-semitism, others that have said the sack of Constantinople and the murder of innocents by the 4th Crusade was deserved.

It doesn't seem like there are moderates anymore. The legislators described as moderates lack the wild and crazy persona but vote exactly the same as the crazies. They aren't willing to compromise.

Bipartisan bills may have one or two votes from the opposing party.
