Joy. What is joy to you? Euphoria, laughing till you cry, dancing on a hill like the Sound of Music lady? Not to be snide; it is good to know what you’re looking for, and to decide if it is realistic to expect. At salvation, when the burden of guilt is lifted from a person, that relief along with all the other benefits of coming in contact with Jesus our great savior is a high point that is surely a high of highs emotionally. If that is not a unique set of emotions, it would surely be hard to reproduce, one would think. Also there are many emotional states to the vibrant Christian life. They run the gamut from free flowing tears to ecstasy and everywhere in between.
So, what is to be expected? I think that, relationally, a Christian should expect the same kinds of emotional states as a young child. A son or daughter who curls up on the couch next to their daddy and falls asleep with his arm around them could be considered to be in a state of joy, eh. So, what is required for that child to be able to or allowed to be in that place? Well, they have to have a relationship with the parent; they have to be welcomed by the parent, they have to get onto the couch and curl up.
For the Cristian, salvation affords us the relationship. We, of course, should try to remove everything that is offensive to the Lord from our life; not that we would not be welcomed per se, but such things surely could dampen joy. Finally then, I think that we should make a conscious effort to get near to the Lord regularly; to curl up next to him on the couch.
The suggested methods of curling up would be as easy as just talking to the Lord as though he were actually standing next you, setting aside private time to give your attention to him alone, thank him for his blessings remembering the old one too.
A more advanced method of curling up is a fast or fasting. I would recommend checking with a doctor first to ensure it won’t hurt you if you have health issues. Spending an extended time in prayer and fasting can bring a closeness to the Lord that is hard to match.
Ultimately joy for a Christian comes from the relationship with Jesus; so, be about growing it and strengthening it. As it says, “make straight paths” between you and the Lord clear of obstacles and well worn.
