Affirmative Action: Supreme Court to consider landmark challenge to Harvard and UNC admission policies - CNNPolitics

The Supreme Court announced Monday it will reconsider race-based affirmative action in college admissions, a move that could eliminate campus practices that have widely benefitted Black and Hispanic students.

The justices said they will hear challenges to policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina that use students' race among many criteria to decide who should gain a coveted place in an entering class.

Let’s hope this racist policy gets struck down so that students can get based on merit and not melanin.

It really isn’t about who it helps. It’s about whether or not it’s fair.

No, it's about being able to stick it to institutions you don't like.

I don't have any particular love for Harvard's admission system - I've known people who've participated in their alumni gatekeeping review process and I was stunned at how vulnerable that process was to the sorts of implicit biases I would've assumed they'd want to guard against. I don't know if they've updated it in the last couple years, but at least 5-7 years ago, it was jaw-droppingly bad.

That said, it's hard to take any conservative complaints of racial "fairness" seriously when you guys pooh-pooh similar concerns in virtually every other context.

Ironically, affirmative action is racial discrimination meant to counter racial discrimination. It was useful for a while, but the paradox can only be acceptable for so long. It's about time we put an end to it.

Maybe they can check out the acceptance rate for wealth as well as race:

'Many US colleges admit “legacies”, or students with a family connection to the university, at dramatically higher rates than other applicants. They are widely seen as a reliable source of alumni donations. “They do tend to be white, and they do tend to be wealthier,” Bian said in an interview. “I think that’s kind of unfair.”

At Harvard, the acceptance rate for legacy students is about 33%, compared with an overall acceptance rate of under 6%.' How elite US schools give preference to wealthy and white 'legacy' applicants

33% to 6%?

Anything to avoid discussing the actual OP, I see.

"They do tend to be white, and they do tend to be wealthier..."

And by a factor of 5. I thought you wanted to discuss racial quotas. Seems the 'white quota' is over represented. Now you don't want to discuss it?

Then we'll let the figures tell the story.

I was really disappointed recently to find that, though Harvard sells Harvard-branded baby clothing, they don’t sell any that say “Legacy.” That’s the kind of irony I live for and they denied me.

I thought you wanted to discuss racial quotas.

…or fairness

You’ve linked to two other articles. They would make good threads.

I thought this was a thread about race based advantages in getting into Harvard. Are articles discussing that very subject not relevant?

It’s actually about the article in the OP. I okie that’s a crazy thought, but I figured we’d give it a shot.

And the article reads: 'The justices said they will hear challenges to policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina that use students' race among many criteria to decide who should gain a coveted place in an entering class.'

My article was about using students' race as well. No doubt the justices will be investigating all examples of racial priviledge.

You should start your own thread. With a current article.

About racial privilige? This is it.

Do you really think that if you start a thread on a topic then the only discussion allowed on that topic must reference just the article to which you linked? I think not.

The elimination of race weighted admission policies might dovetail well with the elimination of standardized admissions tests, which many university systems seem to be dropping.

Why are they dropping the tests?

I am. I'm contrasting what it says with the one to which I linked. Yours suggests that getting beneficial treatment because of your ethnic background is a problem to be solved. And uses black students as the example of those who are benefiting. Whereas mine says exactly the same thing except that white (and rich) students are getting a much greater advantage.

Maybe they should accept students on merit alone. How does that sound?
