And Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may be made blind.
Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, Are we blind also?
Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, We see. Therefore your sin remains. [John 9:39-41]
The context of this passage can be traced back to John 8:12 where Jesus says, I am the light of the world. After healing a man who had been blind from birth and imparting salvation to the man, Jesus makes the above statement Therefore your sin remains to some Pharisees who in their spiritual blindness had rejected the Savior.
May I say, every person who realizes his or her spiritual blindness becomes a candidate for seeing; those who refuse to recognize their spiritual blindness, place themselves beyond help. To paraphrase verse 41; Jesus said If you would only admit your blindness, you would not be guilty of sin, because I could forgive it; but because you claim your own self-righteousness, your guilt remains.
How many people enter church Sunday after Sunday thinking they must be good enough in Gods eyes since they see themselves as righteous. Not righteous in Christ but righteous with in themselves.
Only Jesus can release a person from spiritual darkness and only Jesus can give perfect righteousness that will stand the test of God. Jesus is the light of the world, not a light among other lights, but the light. Religion will not save-- only Jesus saves. Take note, many times those who claim to have spiritual light are the most blind of all. I believe the Pharisees prove that point. What say you?
