The interior makeover of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris presents us with some very disturbing questions. Everybody will remember the fire in April of 2019 which severely damaged one of the best-known churches in Christendom, and the outpouring of gifts from rich and famous people around the world to aid in its restoration. The restoration of the exterior is proceeding under the authority of the French Ministry of Culture; but the interior renovations are in the hands of the Archdiocese of Paris. (Such are the vagaries of life in the modern nation state.)

The shallowing of Notre-Dame de Paris
I remember on my trip to Europe now several decades ago I could feel a difference between the Anglican cathedrals of England and the Catholic cathedrals of the mainland. The Anglican ones were for tourists, and they charged a fee to get in. The Catholic ones were free to enter and maybe had a fee to climb the bell tower or something. The Catholic ones, at least back then, had an air of worship about them. Sounds like the caretakers of Notre Dame want a tourist destination. The strength of these old Catholic cathedrals was that some people would go there for the tourist thing and be surprised to be moved by being in the presence of God. I went to Ghent, Koln, Munich, Paris, and it was the same. But London and Salsbury not so much even in the grand architecture. I did feel it in the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey though.
