No---better yet:

Each and every one of them should be sentenced to having a 12"X8" Union Jack tattooed on their chests AND their backs, with 2"-high letters underneath reading "THERE'LL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLAND".

They apparently like to decorate things; fine. Let the punishment fit the crime.

Ouch Wolseley!

One year there was a major foul up (ahem!) on July 4th and both the Royal Navy and US Navy were in port in Amsterdam (this is not supposed to happen.)
Well an American sailor either lost a bet or got so blitzed he slept through it, but wokre up with a Union Jack tattoo! and the words "Brittania Rules The Waves"...

The only problem with that is, the last I heard, it was illegal under French law for a French national to enlist in the Foreign Legion.

I don't think it is the case anymore. And when it still was, you were offered the option of changing your identity (unless you were convinced of murder, rape, or anything serious).

It is a well-known fact that the vast majority of the "legionnaires" who were supposedly coming from Monaco for example were in fact French.

Thanks for the update, Oliver. :)

I guess things have changed since the days of "Beau Geste". ;)

I did see a documentary not too long ago that said they have pretty much lost their "distinctive, mythical" status---any more, they're pretty much like any other unit in the French Army; same uniforms, same weapons, same training and tactics.
