I don't trust Windows Defender or Security Essentials as far as I can throw them. I'm partial to AVG and Avira.

Since this post, I've been mostly using Defender on its own without issue (mostly because I reformatted my laptop once and never got around to reinstalling AVG) - that said, I guess my browsing habits are generally pretty mindful, and I know the kinds of things to look for.

For end user, I'd probably still suggest AVG or Avira. In terms of not-realtime-scanners Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is quite good at rooting out any additional crap that's come out. Not too impressed with their latest version (I used it for the first time in 2 years the other day) but it still seems to do a good job.

ZoneAlarm free antivirus and free firewall. They have a paid version too, but the free ones do a pretty good job.
Nope, that thing gets in the way of usability of the computer too much. I grew up with it and I hate it. Next.

I also have a war story from my friend about Windows Defender not letting said friend download a completely safe game, so I recommend replacing it. I still use Norton 360 because it does its job and largely stays out of my way.

And if you're not running a web server, Linux doesn't need antivirus, or it needs it way less. If you are running a web server, get an industry-strength firewall. ZoneAlarm definitely won't cut it in that case. :p

I recommend avast for a freeware anti-virus. I personally use nod32 but you have to pay for that one. I think it's $50 a year but I'm not sure I just pay the bill every year.
