Is the Nazi-friendly CEO of Coca-Cola still in office? No? Then it's hardly a comparison to Dan Cathy, who is the same homophobic jerk he has always been.
Obviously not...which is why I asked how much time has to pass?
In the case of Chick-fil-a, they are a private company owned by the Cathy family. They could do a lot to become publicly traded and fire Dan Cathy.
...but that still doesn't negate the fact that it's just a case of people prioritizing one form of human mistreatment over another based on their own personal convenience impact.
"Hey, Dan Cathy, will you change your LGBT views?"
-
No, I'll keep giving my personal money to those causes, but, the company will change our corporate giving habits, and instead focus education (by sending 8,000 of our employees to college every year), homelessness, and fighting hunger in inner city communities
"Grrrrr, that's not good enough, hey everyone, don't buy their stuff!"
"Hey, Tim Cook, will you stop sourcing things from slave labor in China? And Jeff Bezos, will you stop overworking/underpaying your employees, and y'know, give them a break longer than 15 mins since it can take 10 minutes just to walk from the warehouse floor to the breakroom in the massive warehouses, and will you stop funneling money toward union-busting efforts when they try to organize?"
-
No, but we'll tweet #BLM and
"
"Okay, you're cool...I'm so happy to support businesses that believe in human dignity"
...and lets be honest here, Dan Cathy giving money (in, what equates to, negligible sums in the realm of political giving) to failed organizations that zero chance of influencing policy stands to do a lot less damage (if any at this point...I can't think of the last time any of the orgs on his giving list actually had a policy "win") than Bezos throwing millions at anti-unionization efforts (and subjecting his employees to a one-sided "Know the facts before you sign a union card" HR training course), and Tim Cook funneling billions into unethical Chinese labor practices.
That's why I'm asking for consistency here...
People who claim "I'm never going to give a dime to chick-fil-a!!!" are making about as much of a sacrifice (in the name of human rights) as a person who says "I'm never going to buy another Ted Nugent album again!!!"
It's basically a meaningless gesture that's "easy", and involves no actual sacrifice.
