Some believers who believe that they can sin and still be saved have told me that sin merely breaks fellowship with the Lord but it does not affect their salvation.

However, 1 John 2:4 says “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

John 17:3 says, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

So what they say does not line up with what the Bible says.

Well, I don't know about what Jason would say, but
I know that I, Bible Highlighter will say this:

Watching popular sin filled secular movies is not the way of God ~ IMO.
Such things should be a part of a believer's old life.
The character Phil (Bill Murray) sleeps with Rita outside of marriage.
This is fornication according to the Bible.
77 Chances is a Christian version of Groundhog Day (that I would recommend instead).

One can rent this through Christian Cinema:

Anyways, if anyone here is interested in my other Christian movies that seek to uplift God's Word and in following Jesus, check out this CF thread link here:

It was a rhetorical question. When someone mentions the movie Groundhog Day, it's usually in reference to something that keeps being repeated over and over - like this thread.

In Groundhog Day: If one refers to the MacGuffin in this film, they cannot separate the MacGuffin from the rest of the storyline that has immoral things within it.

According to a Google search, these list of sins come up for the film Groundhog Day.

  • Sloth: Sitting around in a bathrobe watching game shows till he has them memorized.
  • Greed: Stealing the money out of the van.
  • Gluttony: When he started eating like a pig.
  • Wrath: Basically whenever Phil hurt someone, knowing there'd be no consequence.
  • Lust: Sleeping with every woman he could find.
  • Envy: Hinted at in his relationship with the news anchor "Hairdo" Nan.
  • Pride: Phil's biggest character flaw.

Now, should a Christian really be promoting this movie?
No, not for any reason.

Actually the character started out that way but eventually started developing integrity and performing good works like lovingly caring for a homeless man he originally snubbed. He went for being a selfish misanthrope to being a caring philanthropist. But those aspects of the story aren't what's taken into consideration when the "Groundhog Day" term is used. The term is strictly in reference to the aspect of same thing being repeated over and over.

If you want to have a protracted argument over a colloquial term, that's cool, because at least it would be something different.

But like in Matthew 7:22-26, we learn that just doing good works is not good enough if one is also justifying sin (by not doing what Jesus says). For anyone who does not do what Jesus says is like a fool who built his house upon the sand and when a storm came, great was the fall of that house. A person's good deeds cannot outweigh their bad deeds. That would be Works Alone Salvationism and the apostle Paul fought against that kind of belief. This does not mean works are not required after we are saved by God's grace, though. It's both grace, and Sanctification; For God has chosen us to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and a belief of the truth (See: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14).

Side Note:

It also does not change the promotion of sin in the film. One can try to distract away from these sins, but they will still be there. Most secular big popular movies promote sin. But most today turn a blind eye to these kinds of things.

There is obviously a huge difference between an excessive sin in your face filled Hollywood movie like Groundhog Day, and a Christian film (like 77 Chances) whereby the protagonist is changed by Christ. But if one wants to look at the content in 77 Chances so as to see if it is family friendly, one can check that out here:

Did not read your long write up, if something is that long, then they are making receiving Eternal Life (salvation as many say) complicated.

It is as simple as this, if a person wants to receive God's free gift of Eternal Life. Then believe that Jesus is the promised Messiah from the prophecies of The Tanakh and trust in The Messiah for God's free gift of Eternal Life.

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

The Bible is really a big book. Do you say the same thing when it comes to reading the Bible? God has a lot to say. So the amount of the information should not determine whether or not what I said with the Bible is true or not. You can obviously read my post in bite sized pieces if you feel it is really important. Take for example the word “faithFUL.” What do you think happens when a husband and wife are faithful to each other? Do you think they just have a belief alone? Surely not. It is in their moral conduct that determines whether they are faithful or not. In fact, the word faithful is derived from the word faith. So they are not foreign concepts to each other. This is just the tip of the iceberg of some of things that I have mentioned.

Seeing as how 77 Chances is billed as "If you're a fan of Groundhog Day, then you'll like this" I'm going to suppose that like the main character in Groundhog Day, the main character in 77 Chances has negative attributes and those negative attributes are corrected over time. Thus neither movie promotes those negative attributes, but rather presents them as being undesirable attributes in need of correction.

My point in post #29 stands. If one cannot undertand the difference between a Christian film and a big budget Hollywood sin promoting film, I cannot help that person. They are simply seeing what they want to see and arguing nonsense. Look at the reviews for the film and watch it, and compare the two (if one feels they must do so). Write down a list of the sins in both films and see how they compare. Is one film leading you to the Lord and His good ways? Or is the other film leading you to think worldly and sinful? I think most Christians will side with 77 Chances over Groundhog Day in regards to God and morality.

Getting back on topic:

I think it is safe to say that most Christians today do not agree that the “work of faith” is a part of the “faith.” I think most today do not want to accept the truth that the word faithful comes from the word faith and being faithful is defined in being morally upright in one's conduct. But again, folks want to ignore things like this because it does not agree with a belief they want to be true that is more easier going and simple. They want smooth things spoken unto them (See: Isaiah 30:10).

Actually aside from the theme of the same thing being repeated over and over, the content of either film is irrelevant regarding the colloquial term "Groundhog Day". However, it's notable that you and other sources compared the movie 77 Chances to the movie Groundhog Day - thus promoting Groundhog Day. You even just recommended watching Groundhog Day to compare it to 77 Chances.

You sure do put down most Christians a lot. The topic of this thread, just like several other threads you've started, is about how deplorable most Christians are.

The work of faith is part of a believers life (or should be) but it is not required for a person to have works of faith to receive God's free gift of Eternal Life.

What is required is simple so simple, that satan through people has had to complicate and confuse God's simple free gift offer of Eternal Life.

I am amazed how many times on here i see sin being brought into the issue of receiving Eternal Life. When Jesus took away the sin of the world, permanently removing the issue of sin, so all that is left to do for a person seeking Eternal Life.

Is to place their faith in The Messiah for God's free gift of Eternal Life.

No amount of repentance, obedience, commitment, confessing sin, faith works, etc... can get a person God's free gift of Eternal Life than the one time act of simple trust in The Messiah for Eternal Life.

Jesus was asked what are the works we do of God, He replied, believe in Him, the one God sent. Period end of discussion.

Even the faith a believer begins with is just a qualifying condition. It isn`t salvation. We become saved when God receives us as His through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. That is the new birth. Making a list of dos and donts isn`t new birth.

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
