The old testament is a litany of wickedness and every evil and unrighteous aspect of human nature, with few exceptions.

If this were presented as an example of how not to live I could continue reading it, but as the God of the old testament commands and condones atrocities, I feel it is polluting my soul to read any more.

It is also beyond credible to believe that a human being can live up to a 1000 years old or that women can give birth in their great old age, and if God thought it was all true and righteous in his name, then why did he sacrifice his only son to come to earth to put a completely different message across?

I don't think Jesus did entirely believe the o t, I think he had to say he did to buy himself enough time to establish Christianity, he was already skating on thin ice with the establishment as it was without completey demolishing the O T, but he used it selectively as a vehicle to push forwards a new Christian way of life.

History is stained with men doing wicked things because they said God told them to do this or that, the O T is just the same.

I have read no other explanation of the O T that I find credible or acceptable, so for now, I will resume reading the N T before my faith in the Bible is corroded any further.

To a degree I agree with you. As a young Christian, I had to stop reading the OT. As I matured (coming up 50 years in the Lord now), I was able to read the OT from God's perspective.

Don't dismiss the OT because you don't understand it. For a start, around a third of the NT is quotes from the OT. Also, Lord Jesus quoted the OT often, including to Satan during the temptation in the wilderness.

Why is it so hard to believe that people could live to 1,000 years? The earth was entirely different then. Ask God to open your eyes to the truth. He will.

God made a deal with the nation of Israel. It was obey and be blessed, disobey and be cursed. Israel agreed. As it happened, Israel continually disobeyed, apart from a few blessed periods of time, for example while David was king.

I could explain in much more detail, but I doubt that it would help you right now. Ask God for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. He's far more willing to reveal truth to us than we are to receive truth.

Reading the NT with no understanding of the “OT” is foolish.

Christ and the Apostles taught exclusively out of the OT.

the NT is based on the OT. Without the OT, there would be no NT.

reading only the NT is like trying to read the last 2 Harry Potter books out of the series of 7, and thinking you understand the entire story and context, when in fact you are missing an overwhelming majority of the foundation.

Well people historically speaking have had this reaction before.

Marcion of Sinope

But your view (the OP) is against the actual early church, which used the Old Testament primarily as it's "Bible", and preached from it much like saint Paul does in books like Hebrews and Romans.

Well fancy that!

I LOVE the OT and it’s bloody satisfaction. "Vengeance is mine, I will repay." That’s coming for the enemies of God whether you like it or not, and the Son will execute it.

7Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle!
—Psalm 24

"...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away fromb the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might..."—2Thess.

Be thankful we lounge in the dispensation of the grace of God (Ephesians 3:2), when He is not currently smoking the earth and it’s inhabitants. For that read Revelation.

Keep reading and studying the NT. It will just lead you back to the OT.

I don't think you're alone in your reaction. I think many people find difficulties in the OT and in the NT also. There are many hard things and hard sayings in the Bible. It's important to put these things into their proper context, especially their historical context.

Did you read any of the multiple prophecies about our Messiah, Jesus Christ of Nazareth? Did you read about the multiple Christophanies? Did you read Proverbs and Palsms giving us wisdom and truth? Did you read about the many trials and victories of a peculiar people who were chosen by God to bring in the Savior? This is all in the Old Testament. It is a genuine account of our Lords earthly ancestry.
Your impression is sorely misguided due to your lack of understanding. This is not uncommon however , it offers no excuse to set aside the richest book ever written in the history of human kind. Be blessed.

So, who is holding a gun to your head, forcing you to read the Old Testament? Why are you posting this on a Christian forum? If you don't want to read the OT, I have a suggestion: don't read it.

New Testament is also Paul reproving Christians and then even Jesus himself in revelation plus all these abominations plagues and suffering in revelation , nothing changed really.

Yes, it is hard to find a more thorough itinerary of human evil and that is the point.
Human efforts to follow sacred rules, holy laws, etc etc always fail.

The of is hard to read and it helps to have a commentary on it. See if you can get Matthew Henry's commentary on the Bible or use sites like answers in genesis to investigate difficult passages.
( Yes they are yec, so what, they stand on the authority and accuracy of the whole Bible, not just the bits you like! )

As has been said the OT foretells the coming of Jesus, it is the Bible that Jesus used to preach from as did the apostles when they went preaching.

If you still think it is a pack of fairy tales please post your reasoned arguments together with references from the Bible experts who support your views.
